R.I.P. UFC 11/12/93 – 10/18/08

The UFC which started out as “no holds barred” during UFC 89 when dodging your opponent, fighting for the scorecard, and planning to let the judges determine the fight became accepted practice by the UFC.

After winning the main event of UFC 89 by decision, Michael Bisbing made the following comment about his win in the event's featured fight:

“It was a tough fight,” said Bisping. “That was the whole gameplan, take my time, stick and move, and get a unanimous decision.”

The UFC supports this direction in the sport and will make Bisbing a coach in the next The Ultimate Fighter series. Bisbing should have confidence in the judges' scorecard considering the judges handed him his win in UFC 75 over Matt Hamill but this type of fighting is no more entertaining than watching boxing.

All good things end. So long UFC!

I completely agree, so they should show the "execution" or "lock" of the submission and not get into details about the motions leading up to them so much.

Just stating that I'd rather not hear Rogan confuse people with lockdowns, electric chairs, whip ups, crackhead control, stoner control, and the other things he is familiar with and some fans are familiar with, but clearly not everyone will be familiar with.

If they could just show the execution and have it explained by someone using relative terms then I think it would work out.

And the transition really isn't important for these purposes. The point isn't to turn an average person into a BJJ practitioner, it's to help them understand what they see- i.e. why did that guy tap out just now?

I said before, they have done it in the past already. It wasn't Rogan doing either... IIRC Miletich and Laimon did most of them.

It wouldn't be terribly difficult to show the execution of a submission, what would be hard is for them to explain all the movements that lead up to the execution of said submission.

I can only imagine Rogan trying to inform the public on Eddie Bravo style submission vocabulary. If they did short in between segments just detailing the "visible" or open parts of submissions (i.e. locking in the sub) it'd probly help. It's not going to be possible to show that many transitions or set-ups though.

I think there must be some way to educate fans about the ground game without VH1-style pop-up bubbles, and they used to give a fighter’s style upon walking out, but discontinued that due to fighters not being tied to any single style.

The little between-fight instructionals they used to do were pretty good. They did them in IFL too. Basically they just demonstrate a move and its fundamentals

Well at least you have taken some writing classes. Better then some articles I have read on here. As far as production goes I dont want to dilute the product to the point of constant graphics and stats on the screen during the fights. Some 'CompuBox" type scoring between rounds might be nice or maybe a guest to judge a card and explain how he scored the round. Also more Rogan and less Goldberg.

Man was that a tough read. no flow whatsoever. all round very poor writing, especially based on the caliber of writing this site usually displays. i dont want to rip on another fan who's just trying to put in their perspective, but this type of breakdown is quite unnecessary and IMO, just takes up space that could be filled with either adam morgan's excellent wrap ups, or huckaby's pros and cons. im sure there is a manner in which this new guy Lee could add his expertise toward dissecting fights, but this fashion is most unsuitable. better luck next time.

I enjoyed reading your take on the production. A couple of times I found myself disagreeing with you, or wanting to point out some things that you didn't quite seem to get right, but then realized that this is the point of your piece.

Too often us readers of sites like this think everyone has the same knowledge-base of MMA as those of us who have been watching for 10+ years. It is great to read the impression of a big fan of the sport, but who probably doesn't spend 5 hours a day scanning MMA websites so that he knows going into the event that Joe Rogan grew a beard on a proposition made on the Underground Forum at mma.tv as a tribute to Evan Tanner (which would have been nice if Rogan had explained that to the more casual viewer).

Anyway, I like your take on this, because MMA's success is dependent upon more than appeasing the hardcore fans. I'm not sure I really like some of the suggestions, but I appreciate where they come from. I think there must be some way to educate fans about the ground game without VH1-style pop-up bubbles, and they used to give a fighter's style upon walking out, but discontinued that due to fighters not being tied to any single style.

This article could have used some graphics to spice it up. Like a "Graphic Mention #12!" graphic. Or "Rogan Beard Reference #3".

Seriously though, I think in-fight graphics would be way tacky, but a breakdown of the stats between rounds would be awesome.

Casual viewer: “Daddy, isn’t that tripping?” Chuckling Daddy to son/casual viewer: “No son. That’s a legal move known as a takedown. See, it even says “Takedown: Taylor” on the screen.

Terrible idea.

A) We're depending upon a tech crew to be able to get that crap up in time on a live broadcast. I don't trust them to call the fight as rapidly and accurately as Rogan, or to be able to listen to his calling and put his words on the screen rapidly enough to make this feature useful. Also there is some subjectivity to calling a fight, one person calling it is enough or things could get confusing.

B) Really speedy ground work or standing combinations would completely overwhelm this feature. So this feature would be limited to a few specific moves which means the UFC is now lending greater weight to certain submission attempts or combinations. I don't trust them to do that.

Let Rogan call the fight.

I do agree that more statistics being shown before, between rounds, and after fights is a great thing. Other orgs already do this.

Dude, that sucked! I bet you'd be willing to help the UFC out. Nice try. They won't come calling due to insights here. Your cheap shots at Jardine came out of nowhere. You must really have a crush on him. It's easy for everyone to see that you are the ugly one!
