Mike Brown retains title in battle with Urijah Faber at WEC 41

Defending WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown left no question as to whether his belt grabbing victory over Urijah Faber was legit as he grinded out “The California Kid” on his home turf over five grueling rounds.

The two met up at Sunday evening’s WEC 41 card which took place in Sacramento, California.

After getting off to a good start, landing hard right hands on several occasions, Faber wound up breaking his right hand on the head of Brown in the fights opening round. From that point on it was Brown who dictated the pace of the bout. Faber would go on to throw many elbows and open handed palm strikes but his inability to fire off punches led to Brown being able to manhandle him in the clinch. When it was all said and done two of the judges had it scored 49-46, with the third scoring it 48-47, all in Brown’s favor.

Also appearing on the card was a man that could very likely end up becoming Brown’s next opponent. It took 145 pound Brazilian phenom Jose Aldo all of eight seconds to add Cub Swanson to his rapidly growing highlight reel. What initially looked like a flying knee turned out to be an unorthodox double flying knee with both of Aldo’s knees slamming into Swanson’s chin in rapid succession. Aldo followed the knees with a couple of well placed, non consequential punches before the referee brought a halt to the contest.

After being forced to do a lot of ground fighting in the opening moments of his bout with James Krause, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone ended up back on his feet where he rocked Krause with a big right hand which he followed with the fight ending rear-naked choke shortly thereafter.

Jens Pulver came awfully close to officially announcing his retirement after suffering his fourth consecutive loss, this one to a highly touted twenty year old prospect by the name of Josh Grispi. Pulver was forced to tap out only thirty three seconds into the bout from a tight guillotine choke.
