Don’t call Ray Mercer a “heavyweight champion”. He briefly held the phony “WBO” title back in 1991 after beating the journeyman Francesco Damiani. Holyfield used Mercer as a tuneup fight after his “heart condition” loss to Moorer. Mercer’s career stats: 36-7-1 (26 KOs).

I wasn’t insinuating that Boxing is far ahead of MMA, at least not in the long run..

But as far as striking goes, I don’t see how anyone can think a top tier Mixed Martial Artist would beat a top tier Boxer in a boxing match..

According to the stats, Roy and Anderson have both been training for 20+ years now..

In those 20 years, Roy has worked on Punching power, Punching Speed, Footwork, and Cardio..

Anderson, on the other hand, started out with Tae Kwan Do, moved on to Judo, and eventually started working on earning his BJJ Black Belt, which he didn’t recieve until 3 years ago.. With that aside, you can tell that he’s only started this boxing fixation in the last year or so..

Now, Anderson does have some serious power in his hands, but I can guarantee that Jones has been hit MUCH HARDER, MANY MORE TIMES, IN A LONGER TIME SPANS (up to 45 minutes sometimes)..

All the facts are right there..

Mind you, this is pretty much a Best Case scenario in MMA vs. Boxing in a boxing match.. Jones is one of the greatest boxers to ever live, and Anderson one of the greatest Fighters to live..

Like I said previously though, Anderson would finish Jones in the first round of an MMA bout..

Tim stood there and took a former gold medalist ko artist’s best over hand right on the chin.

No joke. I was ringside on the opposite side of the ring from which the you tube video was shot. Sylvia got caught with a frighteningly quick right hand to the chin. It was lights out… I don’t know of anyone who could have taken that shot. I was surprised his jaw wasn’t dislocated.

Agree with Rich S. I don’t know why people are so surprised. Mercer is a former Olympic Gold medalist so you know he has the skills but he’s also been a champion and KO artist professionally. Like it or not, Boxing is a bonafide martial art. I’ve only seen the video from the stands but I doubt anyone in MMA could have taken that shot. (Of course, better fighters would have gone for the clinch or take-down and negated his one weapon.)

There should be more love for Mercer. He’s not a great MMA fighter but he’s a 48 year old man showing he’s still got some dangerous licks. I like the “taking care of business, old man style” line. We should all be so lucky…

Remember how those Tim Sylvia vs. Ken Shamrock rumors seemed so ridiculous a few months back? Doesn’t seem to absurd anymore does it.

egad, RJ/Silva is definitely a bad idea…

A mixed martial artist stands a good chance at beating a boxer in MMA rules (except for Sylvia i guess… lol). But in terms of punching power, footwork, and striking ability, boxers, even 48 years old and a little rusty, are on an entirely different level..

So not only is this fight a nice little gem for us Sylvia haters, but it helps the case of boxing vs. mma a little bit…
