Gegard Mousasi: ‘It’s all politics and I can do nothing but wait’

mousasiDisappointed would be an understatement to describe Dutch-Armenian fighting sensation Gegard Mousasi‘s feelings following the recent cancellation of “Affliction Trilogy“.

After years of making his name overseas as one of the most dangerous men on the planet Mousasi finally had his opportunity to show the American public what he was capable of against the most dangerous foe he had ever faced in Renato “Babalu” Sobral.

Mousasi expressed his disappointment for not only himself, but his fellow combatants that will all suffer due to the scratching of the highly anticipated event in a recent statement issued to M-1Global.com

“The only thing important for me is what will be done for the fighters who all trained really hard for these fights,” Mousasi was quoted as saying to M-1Global.com. “It’s very difficult for me and the other fighters who have put a lot of time and energy in their training and now are treated like this because a fighter is caught on steroids? It’s all politics and I can do nothing but wait (and see) what will come of out this.”

No official word is out at this time regarding Mousasi’s return to action but a recent report by MMAJunkie.com states that he is presently being targeted to take part in the upcoming “M-1 Presents Breakthrough” card on August 28 from Anaheim, California which is set to feature a headlining bout between Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal and UFC legend Don Frye.

I see where this is starting to go already. M-1? Wow. Fedor’s management? This is ridiculous. Now I’m starting to wonder how much M-1 may have had to do with this. This is definately one fighter I would like to see in the UFC

I thought Mousasi already trained with Fedor. He should have ties to M-1. I would like to see him jump into strikeforce and fight either sobral or southworth. Both solid fights for him.

man i was so stoked for that babalu mousasi fight. that was the one fight on the card i was looking forward to more than the rest. As far as LHW’s go, the UFC is really the only place for him, other than babalu & little nog there isnt much competition. i know he has sokedjui (sp) coming up but where can he go from there? its either back down to MW or move up to HW. Some great fights in the MW division for him still. this guy could end up with rep like Fedor, except Fedor had his Pride record. Mousasi has a great record but hasnt really been tested over a length of time. could be we never get to see how great he truly is/could be

  • fanoftna33 says:

Have you noticed that after Mousasi wins a fight he shows no emotion, just like Fedor. When he beat souza in the dream finals for the middleweight title it was like a day at the park, not like he won a title.

vlaimir matyushenko would be a good test for Mousasi.

He’s already got Sokoudjou and if he wins that fight he’ll have the final in that tournament plus after that there’s Babalu, Matyushenko, Little Nogueira, Ricardo Arona, Paulo Filho, King Mo Lawal,Trevor Prangley and I could go on. I mean there’s going to be no shortage of interesting fights for Mousasi if he doesn’t sign a UFC contract.

very true mulshia, thats a good list of really good match ups we would all like to see. I would love to see him fight Filho maybe at a catch weight, that would be a really tough one to pick.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • metalmulisha says:

Filho said he wants to fight at 205 now. On Tatame he said His fight with Manhoef at Dream 10 was suppose to be at 205 and then when he got to Japan they told him it was at 185 and he had three days to cut the weight.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • fanoftna33 says:

He sure does look good at 185, but if he wants to move up a fight with Mousasi would be such a good match. I would probably give Mousasu a slight edge due to a superior stand up game.

  • Sure, there are a handful of solid 205 match-ups outside the UFC but there are a handful of amazing potential fights inside the Octagon.

I would much rather see Mousasi take Machida, Rampage, Griffin than Filho, Matyushenko, or Trevor freakin’ Prangley.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • metalmulisha says:

Yeah you’re right Mousasi/Machida would be great, but I’d take match ups with Filho, Arona, King Mo, and Little Nog over Forrest and Rampage any day.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • fanoftna33 says:

Machida vs Arona would be great, but I would first like to see him fight in the us in a cage to see how he handles the difference first

I’ve been hearing Mousasi’s name around for quite a while now. I was wanting the match with him and Babalu to take place so he can get a victory in devastating fashion.

    Doesn’t Mousasi train with Fedor?

…Whoever is training with those guys are all beasts, for real! They put everything they have and some more into their training, and they fight with passion and desire.

Hopefully Mousasi wins out in the Superhulk tourney. Soku should be a good match for him. As some of the other posters have mentioned, there are fights at 205 for him outside of UFC. I’d like to see him get 2-3 fights in at 205 before moving over. Lil Nog, Babalu, Arona, Filho, Matyushenko, Whitehead, and maybe even King Mo would be interesting fights. This would help establish him at 205, now that he has moved up full time. I’m thinking barring a loss, we’ll see him in UFC by early next year.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • ozz_the_powerful says:

We should definately see him in the UFC next year. Look at about half of those names you just mentioned, DPK. I can see over half of them making their way to the octagon.

One of two things is going to happen here; Either Strikeforce is going to get a lot bigger, or the UFC is. That was a lot of fighters to be without “work.” Somneone has to pick them up. I see the latter part of this year getting ROCKED by some hellacious, and hopefully more frequent fights.

So you’d rather see one-dimensional Filho, Arona, and Mo over well-rounded Forrest and Rampage?

Lil Nog, I’ll give you. That fight would be great. And maybe in a year or two, a fight with Mo would be great too.

But Mousasi would batter both Filho and Arona in the stand-up.

  • ozz, just felt like the change. Found a picture of me when I was 8 or 9 and decided to run with it.

fan, I think Arona is a little too stubborn for his own good. Hiss style of wrestling/bjj/GnP has got him to the near top of the 205 mountain and I’m not sure that he’s convinced changing up his game will be for the best.

Unless Soku knocked some sense into him…

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • fanoftna33 says:

It does seem like the better bjj guys dont ever change thier game up much. there are some exceptions but for the most part i think they belive so much in the bjj that striking is always second fiddle.

Somebody said this already but I though it should be repeated; since Babalu is the Strickforce LHW champ why can’t they fight for Strickforce on Aug 15th since that card is quickly turning to shit

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • fanoftna33 says:

I dont think Babalu will want to put his title up for grabs on three weeks notice. It would be a goos thing but the card is still good if they fill at least one of the two recently open fights(Diaz vs ? or Werdum vs ?) it would be better.

Mousasi needs to be in the UFC. He’s an instant contender and his career will explode.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • fanoftna33 says:

I think it would be good to see how he handles some solid competion at 205 first. The fight against babalu would have been his first against a 205 lb fighter. And if he doesnt get on the M-1 card we have to wait until OCT. to see him face Sokodju.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Jstew3785 says:

Why wouldn’t he put his title on the line? He has been training for a fight with Mousasi anyway. All that would change was the date and location. Well, promotion too, but if anything it would give Babalu even more time to prepare. It’s not like they called him at home and said “We need you to defend your title in 3 weeks.” and he’s sitting there out of shape. Agreed Angry Mike that Mousasi needs to get in the UFC. He’s too good of a fighter not to be recognized.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • fanoftna33 says:

He was planning on not putting the title up, Mousasi has a real chance to take the belt. So he loses the affliction fight so what he still has a belt. I am not saying this was his mindset but he may have traind differently had he known his title was up for grabs.

Mulisha your trying to say Filho, Arona, and Mo are more well rounded than Rampage and Forrest???

And to say that Rampage has better wrestling than King MO for MMA is not that big of a statement. Remember he did pretty much outwrestle Lindland and Henderson.

Oh and for the article; there are some great matchups outside of the UFC for him like Arona, Lil Nog, Sokoudjou(already gonna fight), and Sobral (I dont put King MO on this list yet). But there are WAYYY better matchups in the UFC, Franklin, Cane, Cantwell, Griffin, Rampage, Hendo, Ortiz(?), Rashad, Shogun, Machida. I mean I dont think the level of competition is any where near the UFC everywhere else.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Matyushenko would also be a good fight for him like someone said earlier. A big wrestler whos hard to control. It might actually be a trap fight for him if it were to take place.

  • fanoftna33 says:

A match up with Evans would be the best, I think. I personally cant wait for Evans vs Rampage, just to see if the ko to Machida has changed him a bit. I would like to see Evans bring back his wrestling a little but against Rampage that wont be easy.

I said MMA wrestling. Mo, in an amateur wrestling match, would school Rampage.

But Rampage is better at using his wrestling in a MMA environment. A couple of years down the road Mo might surpass him but right now, the smart money is on Jackson.

King Mo’s wrestling is near the top in all of MMA and he would take Rampage down at will in an MMA fight. The guy is an Olympic caliber wrestler.

    Get it?

What the hell are you guys talking about?
If a guy has great wrestling skills he can use them on the mat for an amateur wrestling match or in the Cage or ring for a fight.
Why do you think Canada wanted your example of GSP to go on the Canadian Olypic team for wrestling?
Do you think it was so he could use his “MMA” wrestling.
That’s a term that came out of Joe Rogan’s pie hole a few years ago and now fans toss it around without even knowing how to explain what exactly the differences are or what they’re talking about.

Kid Yamamoto was considered a top P4P fighter in the world not to long ago. Then he fights a guy with World Class wrestling skills and only 1 MMA fight and he gets taken to school. I don’t think Warren was using his “MMA” wrestling to control the fight. It was his great wrestling skills period.

I know Im not the one arguing with you but just to let you know Joe Warren is considered the best greco wrestler in the world at his weight class.(Former world champion and favorite to win the olympics). You also use the fact that Kid is “was a top pfp guy”. He was coming off a very long layoff, and if you havent noticed he looks like a shell of his former self since hes come back.(Just got knocked out by a lower level K1 guy.)

King MO was an alternate on the olympic team, and correct me if im wrong but I dont think hes ever won a national title in wrestling. He might be “world class” but top ten-twenty in the world(for his weight class he is not).

These are of course your opinions and your entitled to them.; I just happen to disagree with you saying he would take Rampage down at will.

  • MMA fighters can box, agreed?

But if they step into the cage and box like they are in a boxing match, the night will not end well for them.

So they tweak their boxing to accomodate MMA.

Just like wrestlers tweak that base to achieve greater success.

And using Yamamoto as an example is poor as KID was coming off a HUGE layoff and Warren didn’t “take him to school” but smothered his way to a decision win.
