Strip him of his belt and have a tournament to crown the new champion. If he wants to be the champ he needs to be a part of the tournament and get his ass in the ring and fight for it.

this is a great article. I’ve been wondering when the hell overeem is going to defend his title. I think both him and cung le should get their shit took if they cant defend their title’s within the next year. I’m not one to acuse a heavily built athlete of taking steroids but i’m with the rest of you . This dude must be taking something if he’s turned down the option to fight in !!!!AMERICA!!!!!. He already has exposure in japan and yet he’s turning down the opportunity to fight and gain exposure in America. Yeah something funny is definately going on.

Overeem is a more like OveRATED!
He has 11 loses and most of them are guys that dont even fight anymore.

He was good back in 2000 for like 5 minutes but he wont beat Fedor so he must already know that so he is going back to K1

Its stuff like this that makes Strikeforce a joke. They have 2 champions that have not defended their belts in years…(Cung Le)….Both of which are WAY overrated anyways! A company should never put their employees over the business…It should be Strikeforce 1st and if you cant fight for us then get off the pot. This wont change though because this is the only reason Strikeforce can get the bigger name fighters (Fedor) Because they give them opportunities to do whatever they want as opposed to the UFC that wont.

I don’t see the problem here. He is off making money in Japan drug test free and leaving strikeforce without a champion to defend their HW belt. Why should Strikeforce be so loyal to a man who has no loyalty towards them? Strip him of the belt and move one

I think he has looked great in wins over Hunt and Buentello. However, this guys to injured to fight in the US but hell schedule multiple events in Japan that has not drug testing…coincidence I think not.

Kudos on the article Cory. Very insightful. I think the part about having him defend at the event with Fedor and Brett is right on the money.

I havent yet figured out why all the hype over Overeem. Yes he is the strikeforce champion but who has he beaten in mma? He has beaten Belfort twice but it was 3-4 years ago. All the top guys he fights he loses to. I have only seen him kickbox once and it was vs Bonjasky in K-1 where he was way overpowering Remy but couldnt hurt him and lost a decision. He looked very slow to me. I really hope strikeforce puts a belt on the linf for Rogers vs Fedor and eventually Overeem makes his way back to lose to either guy.
As for the steriod issue all I can say is he reminds me a lot of Evander Holyfield who also put on about 25-35lbs of solid muscle in very little time.

A couple thoughts:

Big difference fighting with an 8 or 10 oz glove as a kickboxer and fighting with a four ounce MMA glove. If Overeems’s hand injury is legitimate, he might still be able to compete with a heavier, more well padded boxing glove, where an MMA glove could put him at risk. Many many boxers have well documented hand problems however, so maybe that’s not part of what’s happening.

Austin’s point is well taken. Enter “Overeem and Steroids” in any search engine, and you’ll come up with sequential photos detailing his weight gain and added muscle over the past several years. While it’s possible for a gifted athlete with a genetic predisposition for muscle hypertrophy to gain size and strength with heavy weigth training, it’s a lot more likely that Overeem has used anabolic androgenic steroids to enhance his muscle mass and strength. My understanding is that Pride did not and Dream does not drug test in Japan, which might be part of the reason Overeem has not attempted to fight in the US, specifically in California where the CSAC is well known for zero tolerance (unless you’re Nick Diaz…)

Overeem did fight Buentello in San Jose for the Strikeforce belt in 2007, so he must have been licensed in California then. If he’s ready to kickbox, he should be ready to defend the Strikeforce heavyweight title.

I would like to see Alistair Overeem fight Brett Rogers that would be a good fight. Fedor can fight werdum on the same card I like that idea someone said something like that on this site.
