I really dont like Mir’s attitude, he seems like an arrogant, know-it-all, quick to find an excuse, cocky,etc. etc. person. BUT..He is intelligent, he has gotten his training up to par, and after that A$$ WHOOPIN’ HE TOOK from Brock, he WILL re-evaluate his training and ego.Kongo is a better athlete, but I’m not sure he can put it all together against a veteran like Mir. BUT THIS IS WHY THEY FIGHT..YA NEVER KNOW. My cheer for Kongo, my money on Mir.

I actually don’t think Kongo has any chance in this fight. Well, I guess other than catching Mir. Mir takes this easily IMO

what is with the weird hating on mir? i am definitely a fan of mir. he comes across as smart and willing to work and improve. he doesn’t seem full of antics or too much self promotion. he does seem confident – not overly so – of course he did fail to stick to his gameplan against Lesnar in their second fight … but he was pretty gracious in defeat (same couldn’t be said for Lesnar in victory).

this is mostly mir’s fight to win or lose. he could get caught and that would be partly his fault – otherwise he should be able to take things to the ground one way or the other and do well. kongo is no 300 lb monster like lesnar so mir should find a defense to his gnp even if kongo lands in side control.

Mir has this 2rd Sub, prob armbar from the bottom. I’ve hated Mir since the Tank Abbot toe twist, but he’s good at pulling subs out of bad postions.

I think Mir will win it, 1st or 2nd round submission. Kongo’s ground game is a teeny tiny bit better than Houston Alexander’s. If going to the ground were against the rules, Kongo would destroy Mir. As mentioned in previous posts and as we have all seen before, Mir is too crafty on the ground and will twist and tear Kongo’s knee or elbow or shoulder or neck or ankle or toe or nose or. . .

Mir doesn’t need to take Kongo down. He’ll let Kongo take him down or pull guard. Mir won’t get pounded out here, he’ll catch an arm bar pretty quick. Mir sub rd 1

Kongo has an absolutely brutal ground game. He just doesn’t know how to get back to his feet, where he shouldn’t have much troubling KO’ing Mir. That said, I think Mir will be able to take him down and tap him out decently easily.

Mir doesn’t really have good takedowns.. Well, he may, we’ve just never seen them..

Normally, for some reason, his opponent tries to, or succeeds in taking HIM down, and THAT’S where he pulls off those 1 minute submission victories he’s known for.. I bet we see that happen here..

Kongo has sick striking, but if Mir keeps giving him a leg, or clinches with him, Kongo WILL take it to the ground.. mark my words..

And when that happens, I can’t think of any one reason why the fight wouldn’t end there..

Kongo should have the edge in striking but Mir should be the better grappler and his striking looks darn good. People forget his background was originally karate. He doesn’t need GSP level takedowns. It’ll still go to the ground, where Mir will likely win by sub. @Starforsaken – unless there is a low blow by Kongo…

There are a lot of Ifs for both fighters in this fight.

If Mir can get it to the ground.
If Kongo can stay on top on the ground.
If Mir’s striking is on par with Kongo’s.
If Mir has gotten smarter about taking punishment on the ground.
If Kongo can take a good shot on the chin.

I said Kongo by KO earlier. Im gonna have to retract that for now. Im not picking a winner until the week of the fight. If Frank Mir comes in this fight in the same shape he fought Brock in its gonna be hard to pick against him. He was absolutely yoked.

If Mir had beaten Lesnar for a second time, everybody on this site would have a simpering man crush on him. They sure did after he beat Lesnar the first time. Couture lost to both Lesnar and ‘Nog. Why no hate for him? Don’t those losses suggest that Mir’s a better fighter?

Mir’s hands were sharp against ‘Nog. Everybody can make excuses for ‘Nog’s loss if they like, but nobody expected Mir’s striking to be that good or that effective. And nobody can pretend that Kongo’s ground game is close to Mir’s. If Mir gets it to the ground–and I bet he does–he’ll win by submission.

Not to mention his take downs are pretty weak. Kongo isn’t going to be put down on his back in this fight as easy as Velasquez made it look.
I hope Mir tries his great striking in this fight that he used to take out Nogueira last December. You know when he seemed to just run straight forward while punching, but Nog was too fucked up to get out of the way.
If Mir does that in this fight he’s going to get lit up.”
