Urijah Faber vs. Raphael Assuncao set for WEC 46

Urijah FaberFan favorite and former World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight champion Urijah Faber is finally set for his return to the cage.

A bout between Faber and Raphael Assuncao has been verbally agreed to, and will take place at WEC 46 on January 11 according to a recent report on

Faber has not seen competition since losing his bid to regain the 145 title against current champion Mike Brown at WEC 41 where “The California Kid” fractured his right hand in the bout, causing him to sit on the sidelines for the last few months. The 22-3 Team Alpha Male standout, will be looking to make a statement to earn another shot at the belt.

Assuncaoo is coming off of a split decision victory over Yves Jabouin at WEC 43. He holds an overall record of 14-1, and is currently 2-0 since joining the WEC. Both his victories in the organization have come by the judge’s cards.

WEC 46 is scheduled to return to the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California, and could possibly be headlined by Faber’s return. Other rumors swirling are that a lightweight title unification bout between Jamie Varner and Benson Henderson could also headline the event.

Whew, I wouldn’t want to be Assuncao in this fight. I have respect for him as a fighter, but Urijahs going to be hungrier than ever, even more of an incredibly tough opponent than usual. I would love to see Urijah fight for the belt again, he really showed his spirit the way he continued to fight his heart out against Brown in their rematch despite severe fractures and injuries to his hands. Can’t wait for the fight, if assuncao comes hungry and smart, it’ll be a good one!

    Great fight..
I don’t think this is going to be as easy for Faber as some of you guys think..
They’re practically the same fighter. They both throw hard bombs on the feet and they’re both pretty dominant on the ground.. Of course, Faber is a little bit better at both of those areas so I’ll still pick him to win.. But I think it will be a hard fought decision..

I’ve never picked against Urijah and I won’t start now. I still believe him to be a legit p4p contender even though he suffered 2 very unfortunate defeats to Mike Brown, who is also tough as hell. I guess I’m one of the few, ad I’m sure I’ll get quite a few thumbs downs for this, but I thought he was on his way to winning his rematch against Brown before he destroyed his hand. He was finding a home for it all round before his most efficient weapon was taken away.

Like Rich said, I don’t think it will be an easy fight for him by any means, but I think he is just a little do good in every area to lose.

I agree Makington. I think he’d have put Brown away late if he didn’t break both of his hands. This will be a great fight for Faber, look for him to win impressively.
