K.J. Noons Scratched From Jan. 30 Strikeforce card

After taking a break from mixed martial arts to pursue professional boxing, former Elite XC lightweight Champion K. J. Noons was poised to make his mixed martial arts return at Strikeforce: Miami on January 30.  A rumored fight between Noons and undefeated Billy Evangelista never materialized leaving the fighter without an opponent.

In a report today from MMAWeekly, Noons confirmed that it appears he will not be fighting January 30, but remains on standby should the situation change.

As of this report the January 30 Strikeforce event  has just two fights confirmed by the promotion.  The complete Strikeforce: Miami  January 30 card is listed below.

  • Nick Diaz vs. Marius Zaromskis (for the Strikeforce welterweight title)
  • Champ Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos vs. Marloes Coenen (for women’s 145lb title)
  • Robbie Lawler vs. Melvin Manhoef***
  • Bobby Lashley vs. TBA
  • Herschel Walker vs. TBA

That’s the problem with the TBA… it’s a mess. How does a fighter even train for the disipline or style he’s going up against?? Think SF is short changing the fans and the fighters. Simply ridiculous.

Tell Noons to put on some weight and rematch Diaz at 170 after he submits the Whitemare

Good to see Marloes goin’ for the title.

She looked really good against Roxanne Modafferi in Chicago. I dunno if she looked Cyborg-good, but damn good nonetheless.

Strikeforce is probably dicking him around just like he did when he wouldn’t rematch Diaz. Karma baby…

And yet at elite levels even “real” fighters still bring in training partners that mimic or resemble their opponents months before the fight.
Real football teams watch film and game-plan for their upcoming opponent as far in advance as possible. Real basketball teams do the same. It’s like that for all high level sports.

You train the basics, sure, but you focus more on defeating your upcoming opponents strength while exploiting their weaknesses.

The best fights are the ones where both fighters are very ready and well prepared for the other.

Besides that, it’s hard to promote a card or get excited about a fight if no one knows who’s on it. There are a few fights that I would be willing to shell out $45 for by themselves, but not many.

To Further the point, the sport is evolving. 2 years ago you were hardpressed to find fighters who “gameplanned” and watched tape.

Now you are hard pressed to find one who doesn’t.

The “REAL” fighter label is changing. Real fighters are starting to have an equal ballance of Brain and Budo.

and in 5 more years it will have all changed again, as the sport fills up with Top level athletes. The type of Athlete who is 16 today, and sees a future in Mixed Martial Arts FIRST and not as a consolation prize because he didn’t cut it on the football field, or Baseball Diamond. Athlete’s who will have worked their entire formatable years on wrestling, boxing, and Jiu Jitsu

@Dufresne- Yeah and you also have to work on your own weaknesses rather than just exploit others. And it’s not like mystery men pop out of nowhere to fight. Most fighters know the other fighters. How many fighters sit in the crowd at the shows and watch other fights? A lot.

You’re acting like it would be impossible for Green Bay to play Detroit if they didn’t know ahead of time.

There is a reason why these guys are on the tv and your sitting on the couch. Stop hating them because they are wise enough to prepare themselves, I can borrow you my greatest knockouts UFC 1 if you really want to see the kind of fighters that step into a ring without training for their opponents properly.

No one is hating anybody. And nobody said anything about not training properly.

  12. Niv says:

Well guys I think both sides of this argument are valid. These guys are pro’s and train for just about everything, but proper preparation and study will always help you find something to exploit.

Now on the flip side of things there have been many fights over the years (more in boxing than mma) where fighters get to know each other too much and the fights become duds. Look at the bright side here, the less time you have to prepare for your opponent could actually help make it a more exciting fight.

So far SF has done nothing but put on very exciting fights, so I’m not too concerned about the TBA issue.

  16. Angry Mike says:

How about they just throw an even number of names in a hat and match them up randomly? Nobody has to watch tape and everybody gets a fight unless they’re the one who’s injured.

P.S. What’s Noons’ issue? Is he injured or disinterested or what?

  17. onebaldegg says:

i don’t mind waiting to hear who is fighting. i think the fighters who end up on the card are informed of a potential matchup. i think strikeforce keeps things tight lipped to avoid more abuse from the UFC. i don’t believe they feel it is a big problem to only announce a couple of fights and a couple of other fighters that are appearing since all of their cards up to this point have been FREE! They always have announced the Main event in a timely manner and fighters who will appear (maybe not who they will matchup against), which is what they base the advertising on.
