Wanderlei Silva not interested in fighting Anderson Silva, wants Rich Franklin next

wanderleiWhile former PRIDE champion Wanderlei Silva has Michael Bisping set in his sights for the time being, “The Axe Murderer” has already began to think about the future, and apparently current middleweight champion Anderson Silva has no part in it.

“I talk with Anderson again who was my friend for so long and we had our problems but we’re done with those problems,” said Silva during a recent fan Q&A session that took place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. “At this moment, I don’t want a fight with him. He’s the champion. I need to prove myself again inside the Octagon. I need to fight better.

“After few fights I would feel comfortable, but now, I don’t want a fight with him.”

So if there are no title hopes in the near future for the rebounding knockout artist, who then? According to Wanderlei, his first choice is fighting an opponent currently signed with Strikeforce, but the next name on his hit list seems like a much more realistic possibility.

“I wanted to fight with Dan Henderson, but he left (for Strikeforce),” explained Silva. “I would say Rich Franklin. Our first fight was a close match. I think I won, he thought he won. It was a tough decision. But the UFC is great with a lot of good fighters. So all fights have the potential to be a great match.”

Silva will face of with Michael Bisping at UFC 110, which is set to take place from Sydney, Australia on February 20.

I love how classy Wandy always stays. He is a huge name in MMA, maybe not so much since his PRIDE days, but he still seems like he’s just thankful to have a job at all. He’s always respectful to his opponents and to the judges even when things don’t go his way.

I would love a rematch with Franklin. That was a fun fight that was very back and forth. Franklin would start building momentum and Wandy would connect and Franklin would stagger back for a few seconds before coming back.

My only question for this fight is: What weight would this be at? Franklin’s last few fights have been at a catchweight 195, but Wandy seems to want to fight at MW. Will he go up or will Franklin come back down?

PlagueAngel: The guy basically wants a fight with someone at a different weight class. Why? How would that benefit anyone? He needs to focus at middleweight….come on Dufresne. He needs to want to fight people in the UFC and at middleweight. Also, maybe the champion at 185…come on Dufresne.

When did he say he wanted a fight at a different weight class? Hendo fought at MW as well as LHW, Franklin is a former MW champ. Is it really that hard to think that he might want Franklin to drop down? And he said that IN THE PAST he wanted Hendo but that’s no longer possible… come on PlagueAngel.

First off, I have to say that I’m surprised at the fact I keep giving Kind “of Thumbs Down” Mah Mah thumbs up. You have made some excellent points as of late.

Now on to the matter at hand…

I understand that a catch weight is what it is – a chance for fighters to try out different weights or, conversely, for fighters to get at each other without getting the 10% penalty for not making weight. The difference between MW and LHW is minimal, and as such I do agree that there need not be any catch weight bouts at 195. Where they would be helpful is if they made either a Super HW class for fighters 240-265 or a weight class of 205-230 (super MW? I don’t know WTF that would be called…).

As far as Wandy is concerned, if you truly look at what he said (“I wanted to fight with Dan Henderson, but he left (for Strikeforce),”) he already knows that unless he goes to SF then a match with Hendo is a no go. I think that he needs to get past The Count first (and I personally hope he destroys him as bad as Hendo did at UFC 100), and then he needs to work something out with Franklin; either Wandy steps back up to LHW to avenge his loss, or Franklin slides back down to 185. I know that the Spider is one helluva fighter, but not wanting to be in a weight class because of one person is nothing but cowardice.

Thumbs up or down, I said my piece. Think of it what you will.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 19 Thumb down 10

He’s not saying he is afraid of Anderson, he didn’t even kind of say it. He has good english, but he makes hiccups every now and then, and I’m pretty sure it was his way of saying he hasn’t earned it yet.

If he KO’s Bisping (fingers crossed) and beats a couple big guys then he will be all over a title shot but he isn’t kidding himself the way Koscheck does, he knows he doesn’t deserve the title shot yet and he wants to actually earn it if he does.

The thing with Rich makes sense because obviously he wants to avenge his loss. He didn’t seem like he really thought that fight was going to happen either, just that he felt he should have won and would like another chance. Rich Franklin doing 2 catchweights at 195 wasn’t his choice either, he was doing favours for Dana as both Silva and Belfort were going down to MW, while his future is at LHW.

my personal opinion, is that Wanderlei, like Chuck/Randy/Saku/Nog/Cro Cop/Shamrock etc, is a pioneer of this sport, and will always be given some leeway as to what he does, where and when he does it, at what weight he does it, and who he does it with. And too fucking right. i have been watching this man for years, from bear knuckle to Pride champion. If he wants to fight bj penn at catch weight, fuck it, let him. He has earned the right to do pretty much what he wants in this sport. And for a man so immensely violent, he has been a great ambassador of the sport.
Let him fight how he liks, he deserves it, and i’ll be right there watching and supporting him

@Makington… In reference to the English hiccups that Wandy has, what I was referring to was PlagueAngel’s comment of

PlagueAngel: FRANKLIN IS AT 205! He stated he does not want to fight at 185 multiple times in the past two years because of the spider. Lets get back to reality here guys. Hendo is gone, Franklin is at 205, and Wanderlei should want fights at 185.

which made it seem like Franklin no longer wants to fight at 185. I love Rich Franklin as a fighter, and with all due respect to him, if kicking ass is your profession you should be scared of nobody. The Spider will eventually lose to someone… off night, not rigorous enough training, etc. It’s true, too, that Wandy is getting up there in age, but so is everyone else. Life happens, people retire, but on the same scope you have guys like Couture at the age of 46 still headlining PPVs. Only a fighter truly knows their limits, and only an Athletic Commission can say whether or not a fighter can keep going.

  • Angry Mike says:

I’m a ‘Wand fan too, but it’s more from a sense of nostalgia. He was ruthless and entertaining as hell in Pride, but he’s struggled since moving to UFC. Maybe the fights and the years have taken a toll, and maybe the sport has evolved past him. Maybe some of both. He isn’t a contender at 185 or at 205, so nobody who is a contender has an incentive to fight him. It doesn’t really matter to me whether he fights at either or both classes, or in a catch weight match.

Why is everybody belittling Wandy just because he doesn’t want to fight who some ppl think he should.Hasn’t he earned enough respect in the sport of MMA to say who he’d like to fight in the twilight of his career?Besides he lost a razor thin tough split decision to Franklin in his 1st fight in the UFC below 205 lbs. and like “Angry Mike” said: Wandy isn’t really a contender for the Middleweight or the Lightheavyweight title so what’s the problem with him wanting to avenge his loss to Franklin, who by the way is pretty much in the same boat of not being a contender for the title in either weight class?

“According to Wanderlei, his first choice is against someone who is now fighting for Strikeforce, …”

Otherwise, you’ll end up giving Dana a stroke or something.

  • I dont see why everyone is contender this….title that….Dont get me wrong a belt shows who the best is….at the time. Nothing more. Nothing Less. And alot of people would disagree with that statement with “fluke” wins like Serra Vs. GSP, Belfort Vs. Couture 2 etc….. but lets face it…Fedor hasn’t held a legit belt in forever (No i DO NOT consider the wmma belt a legit belt…it was created for Fedor to hold once he finished beating up Sylvia) is he still not the best? Does anyone think Overeem would beat Nog up? I dont, once Nog put him on his back Overeem is done for in miliseconds. Yet Overeem is the one with a title. Who here thinks Shogun is a better fighter than Rashad? Rampage? Forrest? I sure do, but all three of them have held a belt while he has been active. If the Spider loses his belt will everyone say he’s no longer the best until he holds it again? Maybe maybe not. Im about the sport, watching GOOD fights. and Wandy delivers EVERYTIME. I could care less if his next fight was Franklin, Bisping, Kang, or Alan Belcher, I just wanna see him get in the ring and put it down!

    Am I alone?

With all that said I like Wanderlei..he is a nice guy and classy at that I just think he is out classed and gave is all in the 32 wins. He really probably has nothing left in the tank unless its at strikeforce but really he won’t be a champion there either. Dan will beat him and Gegard will smash him.

I think everyone wants to see Bisping get smashed now. The knockout was very psychological on him and you could see it on his last fight between rounds. I was a little hard on Wanderlei and thats probably because I don’t want to see him float around like a terd taking random matches at different weights. I would like to see how he fights at 185 because his smaller size wouldn’t be much of an issue and you would think he would be much faster at 185. I know its “fun” to look at the past, but Wanderlei has lost something the last few years. The UFC will keep him just to keep his star power and ratings. Plus the fact that he is a wild fighter and people like that. Look for Bisping to circle left when Wanderlei pressures him.
