Razak Al-Hasan didn’t receive the benefit of a third pitch, as FiveOuncesofPain.com has recently learned that it was two strikes and you’re out as far as his current career with the UFC is concerned.
FiveOuncesofPain.com has recently been informed of Al-Hasan’s release from the UFC through sources close to the situation.
The Iowa based submission artist entered the UFC with an unblemished record of 7-0, and will be leaving with a slightly tattered record of 7-2 after dropping consecutive bouts at the hands of Steve Cantwell in a contest where he had his elbow dislocated at “UFC: Fight for the Troops”, and Kyle Kingsbury via split decision during UFC 104.
Only once has Al-Hasan gone the distance in his seven career victories, with five of his wins coming by submission and the remaining victory coming via TKO.

He was a fairly entertaining fighter and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back in the UFC or in SF if he can string together a few wins in smaller shows.

Seriously there is worse fighters in the UFC right now with way worse win loss records and they are kept because of being on TUF which is just the UFC trying to milk every penny they can out of some fighters.

I didn’t even find him fairly entertaining to be honest. I found him to be quite boring. I feel pretty safe saying he isn’t going to be seen in the UFC again. His fight against Kingsbury was an absolute snooze fest with Razak trying to outpoint Kyle as best he could. He could do quite well in SF or other smaller shows, but he isn’t up to the UFC level of talent.
Unfortunately for him, all anyone remembers him for his either his large afro(pretty sweet) or the fact that he doesn’t like to tap, even when his elbow is broken.

Agreed pretty big on that one. Even the fighters from TUF that won in the finale are still much worse (Jon Madsen, James McSweeney) Regardless I don’t think Al Hasan belongs with the best promotion as much as I don’t think a lot of TUF fighters don’t belong.

It seems like the UFC is in such a rush these days to sign people, and fighters coming in with records like Al-Hasan’s (7 fights ) is becoming normal. When we see guys make it to the UFC who have over 15 fights they almost seem like vetrans of the sport.

Eh he had a good chance and got dominated by Cantwell, and then lost a split to Kyle, it just shows he isnt up for the level of competition in the Shark tank that is 205. Its a shame but if he can go out and string together some more wins it’d be nice….

I don’t understand why this guy is getting all this love and people are upset for his dismissal. He got his arm snapped by Cantwell by refusing to tap, then losses to Kyle freaking Kingsbury! Let me say that again, Kyle….ah nevermind.

Typically these releases involve the UFC telling the fighter to go win some fights in a smaller promotion to get themselves back on track and make them more marketable. If Joe Silva thinks he really has potential then he’ll be back.

If I’m not mistaken, Al-Hassan was originally signed simply because he was supposed to serve as a replacement for an injured Tomasz Drwal against Andre Gusmao at UFC 87, where ironically enough he too ended up having to be replaced by Jon Jones also due to injury.
Razak didn’t put up much of a strong showing against Cantwell. And although his bout with Kingsbury was close, it wasn’t too exciting. Plus, it was pretty much understood going in that the loser of the fight was getting cut regardless.
Due to the amount of fighters the UFC is signing these days, most UFC newcomers rarely get a third shot in the UFC if they lose two straight after debuting. Fighters filling in for injured competitors are even more at risk as there has been cases where they get cut after just one bout (Derek Downey, Ryan Madigan), so Al-Hassan actually seems rather fortunate to have gotten the two opportunities that he did.
