Ed Soares: Chael Sonnen may have a crush on Anderson Silva
With the most impressive win in his career at UFC 109, Chael Sonnen looks like he might be next in line for a middleweight title shot. Even UFC President Dana White said before he bullied his way through Nate Marquardt, that the winner would face the champion.
All signs are pointing in the right direction for the Team Quest standout; just don’t tell Anderson Siva‘s manager Ed Soares that.
In a recent conversation with sportsnet.ca, Soares said this of Sonnen, “We are fine if this is what the UFC wants, but if you look at this logistically, Sonnen should fight Demian Maia first. Demian beat up easily, by submission, so why not make them fight first, to determine who gets a shot at the title?.”
In past interviews, Sonnen, never short on words, referred to himself as “the alpha male” in the middleweight division and said Siva knew who the real “bully” was. He’s also been quoted as saying Silva’s “fifteen minutes of fame” were up, and out of Silva or Belfort, Sonnen would prefer Anderson because it would be “an easier route” to the title.
“There’s not much to say about that,” stated Soares. “It’s funny, but really, who actually listens to what Chael Sonnen has to say? The only time people listen is when he talks about Anderson. Who is he, really? If you walk down the street and you mention his name, does anyone really know who this guy is? Likely not, but if you mention Anderson Silva, people know the name.”
Soares went on to say, “We’ve spoken with Chael on many occasions and have the utmost respect for him. He’s never really come across in this manner, and it’s obvious he’s just drumming up hype in hopes to get a bout with Anderson.”
Laughing, the Brazilian manager continued, “Chael’s also said a few things about Anderson’s choice of clothes and that he wears earrings, didn’t he? Sounds to us like he may have a crush on Anderson.”
As of now, only one thing is certain, Anderson Silva has to get by Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort, before he starts thinking about Sonnen. The bout is scheduled for UFC 112 in April. The event will take place in Abu Dhabi and marks the first venture for the UFC in the Middle East.

He seems to say this about every single fighter that is offered a title shot. Don’t get me wrong, he’s got an okay point there, but how many times can you say that a fighter needs to be tested more before they fight for the belt? Andersen fought 1 guy that wasn’t even a top 10 MW at the time before he got his title shot, does he really have room to complain?
Well-Done.

Sonnen’s win over Marquardt was impressive, and an upset, at least to me. He should be a little more restrained in remarks about Silva, though. Silva could hurt a guy if he wanted to.

So Ed Soares, who is worthy of a title shot? Sounds like Ed wants to do Joe Silva’s job more than his own.
Well-Done.

So let me make sense of Ed Sores’s statement. Sonnen lost to Maia and should have to beat him to fight Anderson, BUT Maia lost to Marquadt then Sonnen beat Marquadt so what Ed thinks is we should really have a three way dance and the fighter left standing will then have to beat Belfort( if Belfort loses) according to Ed.
It seems like every title challenger out there is not up to Ed’s standard.
Well-Done.

If Dan Henderson couldn’t beat Silva, what makes you think Chael Sonnen stands a chance? Is he a better wrestler than henderson? I think not
Well-Done.

If match-making was up to Ed Soares, we would have never seen Silva fight again after he originally took the belt from Franklin. According to him, no one is ever worthy of being number 1 contender. And to the post above, yes I think Chael does stand a better chance then Henderson. Henderson is a great wrestler who strikes. Chael is a great wrestler who wrestles.
Well-Done.

Ed Soares has no idea how to “sell” a potential fight or how to produce interest in his own fighter when asked about challengers or comments made about his client… all publicity can be good publicity and turned into positve hype if you know how to market your client and his product… Soares doesn’t exactly grasp basic promotion or marketing skills… Hey Ed take a continuing Ed. class for advertising at a community college and maybe you’ll have a clue on how to address the media & press unless your trying to turn off the fans.
Well-Done.

Hey Ed I said that 5 articles back stop biting my shit!!
I definately give this comment some credit because I feel it’s a valid argument, but Ed has got to look at how it makes him and his client look. Saying thingls like this about back to back to back opponents (because he said the same things about Nate and Dan) make Anderson look like he is trying to hand pick opponents. It maybe something I agree with but Ed should probably just shut up.
Hot debate. What do you think?

Chael: My turn! My turn!
Anderson: No, yer ghey!
What a stupid exchange this is. Just fight. Talk is cheap. There is no need to hype this fight really. Anderson Silva draws crowds. He is the personification of hype. That’s not to say he’s “all hype,” because he can lay it down too, but this back and forth is just childish.

@JabCrossHook
chael is not a finisher, but his fights are seldom boring (imho).
and he is not just about lay and pray, but nate gave him that easy path, so i dont blame him for taking it. although i was really startled by nates performance.
and i really think his gnp vs nate was harder than the gnp seen of your bright example in velasquez vs kongo…
so lets not reduce a fighter to a single fight.
while i dont think he has a big chance of beating silva, i’ll still be intrigued to watch it, if silva retains his belt.

Soares is doing his job as a manager and doing it well. He is defending his fighter/paycheck, and doing the smack talk for him. This was Anderson a) can come off like a nice guy and b) get upset when the other guy is “disrsepectful”.
Soares job isn’t to help the sport of MMA, it’s to help/protect his client. Regardless of how well or poorly you think he does his job, expecting him nor to do it is like asking a fish not to swim.

If I was the manager I would have said:
Anderson and myself are not looking past Vitor but …
that big mouth Chael isn’t the next guy in line on paper but my guy will gladly shut his mouth for him and do what he does best should the UFC decide to put this fight together- that is to say if the commision even finds this match up competitive…
You get your point across, you sell the potential fight and you fired off a headline all in one short answer…

well. Ed shouldn’t be the one doing the talking, he is not a fighter. I think Sonnen is foolish in every aspect of his shit talking He is drumming up some Hype but when Anderson is involved the hype is already there.
Anderson destroyed Nate. Chael beat Nate but, with all the elbows he dropped on Nate, Nates face didn’t look nearly as bad as Chaels. Chael thinks Anderson isn’t as good as Vitor and would like to fight Anderson first as said in the post fight press conference but also said that he isn’t ready for Anderson, which means he’s not ready for a title shot. F#ck this guy and his camp complain about every fighter that they have to fight.
I hope Vitor humiliates Anderson. I think Vitor will win but I hope he destroys him.
I don’t want to fight Vitor or Hendo or Chael or dadadada da. Harden up! face it like a man.
If he bithes anymore he may have to face Santos in Stikeforce for the womens title. But I know what he and his camp will say “awwwww but we don’t wanna ooooo”.

So Dana and the boys say the winner gets a title shot and Ed doesnt have anything to say about that. But when Chael wins he thinks he should have to fight Maia? Chael was right, why dont we here Anderson’s voice or opinion occasionally? It gets really old hearing this guy talk. STEP UP AND TALK ANDERSON!

Are you shot? You think Chael’s little girl slaps he gave nate when he was tired were harder than Cain’s vicious hammers coming down on Ben Rothwell’s face? I never used Congo as an example but even those slow GnP were harder, they made louder smacks, I only heard a few from Chael. The only shots that had any real power behind them were those two or three he caught Nate when he postured up, and those elbows he threw. Everything else looked like it barely had any power behind it. Sorry what other skillset does Chael have that’s significant as his wrestling? Nothing else, his striking is barely sub-par and he’s been submitted by a lot of fighters. He also got TKO’ed by Terry Martin. And you people say he stands more of a chance than Dan Henderson did? Are you serious? His chin is nowhere near Dan’s, he was dazed after one cross by nate, he even admitted in the interview.

To all the Chael haters….
He beat Filo when it was thought that he was 1 or 2 in the world
He beat Nate even though most of you guys were on his jock about how he would crush Chael
Lutter proved that if you can control him that Anderson can be beat…Lutter just couldnt control him for 3 rounds.
Chael just might be able to…He may not be old ass Dan Henderson but he has been training with Randy Couture for most of his career so he might just have some tricks up his sleeve….
Just a thought….HA8ERS
