The Axe Men: Frank Trigg latest fighter to hit the chopping block following UFC 109

In what should come as little surprise to most, you can mark Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg down as the latest fighter to be released from the UFC following UFC 109.

Trigg joins Mark Coleman and Tim Hague as the latest in a series of athletes that have been cut from the promotion on the heels of the UFC’s latest event.

The news of Trigg’s release was first reported by MMAJunkie.com, where Frank also went on to say that “he’s undecided if he’ll pursue opportunities outside the organization”.

The dismissal of Trigg follows back-to-back first round TKO defeats in the Octagon at the hands of Josh Koscheck and most recently, former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra.

I understand letting him go but at the same time he shouldnt let this retire him, it’s not like he lost to a couple of chumps. If Strikeforce will take him great, 170 or 185 would have some good match ups, but he is great behind the mic(compared to some other announcers).

I didn’t understand why they brought him back in the first place. He isn’t competitive in the UFC, and he isn’t a big name who will guarantee ppv buys.

I got to disagree, Trigg looked really good leading up to his return to the UFC and I can totally see why they brought him in again, not to mention they wanted to keep him away from signing elsewhere. Because like it or not, he is a “name” fighter that casual fans do know and I got to think that his name does help sell ppv’s. He isn’t the main draw, but he makes for a solid under card fighter and again casual fans know the name and think he is better than he is, and that does help sell somewhat.

ppl know who he is… he does bring a fan base and he does have something to offer just not to that promotion…. I’m sure he lands on his feet just like the hammer will… but neither will fight in the UFC again.

Yetilee, no way they get rid of Nover- With the man crush Dana has on him plus having been on TUF make it impossiable for Nover to be cut from the ufc. Plus they are talking about going to the Phillipens so they need guys like Nover, Munoz and Vera very high on the card. Also he does have a lot of potential to be a very good LW fighter.

The problem with Trigg is he is best known for getting choked out by Matt Hughes twice that sucks man. I believe he came back to redeem himself from being viewed that way. The problem is he caught two bombs on the chin in consecutive fights. Sadly he is best known in defeat

It has already been reported and confirmed that Nover has been cut, it hasn’t been reported here yet but it will be later on today just wait and see.

Wow am I surprised, as you read I never expected that to happen. Maybe they will bring him back as he really didnt have the most experience yet.

He is young, so he has time to get some wins outside the UFC and earn his way back but you really can’t blame the UFC for cutting him. They really had no choice since he lost 3 in a row and not to mention his health is questionable.

  • You know what I’m getting sick of?

The UFC cutting a fighter and people saying that they’d be a welcome addition to Strikeforce.

The UFC is already synonymous with MMA in the US, Strikeforce doesn’t need to add to the stigma that they’re the B-league by being the place where fighters would couldn’t make it in the UFC go to fight.

They need to focus on talent like Melendez, Shields, Rogers, and Mousasi… NOT UFC’s sloppy seconds.

Strikeforce does need to focus on thoes guys Sergio, but a lot of the guys cut from the ufc need more experience and to get high level experience/ fights Strikeforce is the best place to go here in the US. Guys Like Gurgel, MCcory, Hague etc can use the fights and evev though they were cut from the ufc they are still good solid fighters not sloppy seconds.

When your last two events are headlined by guys who got cut from the UFC, you’re presenting yourself as second-rate.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of Nick Diaz and Robbie Lawler’s game has advanced far beyond the “swing-for-the-fences” mentality he had in the UFC but I’m worried about the perception casual fans have towards Strikeforce.

If Trigg fights for Strikeforce next, they’ll think, “Oh yeah, he just fought for the UFC and got knocked out twice.”

I want Strikeforce to succeed but they can’t do it by eating UFC’s scraps. They need to be more aggressive about seeking out regional talent and building them up inside their own organization.

  • I guess I should also clarify that I think there are good and bad signing when it comes to ex-UFC fighters.

Young guys like Tandem McCrory, Josh Neer, Jake Rosholt are good signings. These are young up-and-comers who fought tough competition in the UFC but came up short.

Guys like Trigg and Coleman… they’re done. Trigg said himself back in September that if he couldn’t cut it in the UFC, he didn’t want to fight anymore. Name recognition can only take you so far.

Usually, I’ll expand on certain things I thumbs up, but this basically says it all. FANTASTIC idea.

They should just fire the whole team and take Trigg and maybe even coleman. I’d rather hear either of them over Shamrock.
