Alistair Overeem vs. Brett Rogers set for May 15 Strikeforce
It looks like Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem is finally set to make his much anticipated return to the promotion when he faces off with Brett Rogers in May.
The news of the bout comes courtesy of Alistair himself in a recent conversation with MMAJunkie.com.
The pair of massive heavyweights are expected to throw down on May 15 from St. Louis Missouri, although nothing has been made official through Strikeforce as of this writing.
“He’s an excellent opponent,” said Overeem on Rogers. “I’m looking forward to [smacking] his face and his loud mouth. I’m really happy that Strikeforce came with this fight so now we can settle things once and for all.”
Alistair also went on to speculate that he did not believe the fight would be for the title.
Overeem has not defended the Strikeforce heavyweight championship since winning it with a 2007 TKO over Paul Buentello.
Overeem has been staying busy competing in kickboxing for the K-1 promotion and putting away a series of journeymen in MMA from Japan and Holland, while Rogers will be looking to bounce back into the winners circle following a Novemeber TKO defeat at the hands of Fedor Emelianenko.

Title fight or not this makes no sense
Well-Done.

I dont care if it makes sense or not it will be a great fight. Overeem has much better technique with good power but Rogers has great power and can take a good shot.
Well-Done.

Bottom line is that Overeem fighting Rogers is pointless…
If it’s for the belt you have the chance of Rogers getting the belt and he’s not the HW Champ SF needs to carry them to the next level and basically your saying he’s a number one contender after losing to Fedor…?
If it’s not for the belt and Rogers wins then you have an even bigger back lash against your paper champion Overeem and when he does finally fight Fedor for the belt its not even like a Championship bout…
SF needs someone with balls that will simply strip this guy and just have a HW mini Tourney and get a real champ in there.
SF should stand for Stupid Fucks.
Well-Done.

Not like it’ll matter seeing as how this fight probably wont happen or Overeem will turn in a bad drug test and be stri[[ed finally. But i got five bucks that says this will be cancelled long before show day. it is strike force after all. so sad.
Hot debate. What do you think?

I just read a updated list of K-1 grand prix competitors for April 3rd and Overeem is one of them. Seeing as how he has favored K-1 recently over SF and even though I really hope SuperDave is wrong I wouldnt bet 5 bucks on it.

WTF! Why is rogers fighting Alistair? shount it be Fedor, title fight. Alistair has’nt in SF since a long time and every one is saying that he needs to defend the title, now he finnaly gets set to fight and its not even for a title and its not even with the one who deserves the shot at the belt. insted he gets to fight the guy who lost to the #1 contender.
Maybe SF does their fight a little different, to move up or get a tiitle shot you have to loos.
I agree with race rock but i think that they should not strip the bel from alistair, instead they should MAKE him fight Fedor point blank!
Well-Done.

Should be fireworks, but i dont see Alistair winning this fight.
Cory got any word on why Fedor vs. Werdum hasn’t been signed yet, or the rumor about Fedor’s camp wanting Overeem to go through blood testing before they fight?

Well, this doesn’t make a lick of sense, but at least it should be a good fight..
I can see Alistair tearing Rogers a new one with knees..
I can also see Alistair going down from an overhand right..
I guess it’s a tossup..

i’m just gonna pretend that Strikeforce don’t have any belts, cos they are all immaterial and bordering pointless, except the Cyborg and Diaz titles.
Just wanna see Overeem fight somewhere with a governing body
Well-Done.

Agreed- yeah I think you nailed it on the head. It might be the only way to justify some of SF’s moves.

It actually was long ago. Almost 7 years long ago I’m talking. Did you perhaps watch the Best of Pride dvd’s and get mixed up?
That was also the very same Chuck who was at his best, who knocked senseless guys like Randleman, Couture, Monson, Belfort, Sobral, and Tito. Back then it was expected to get KO’d when fighting Chuck, so I don’t hold it against Alistair that bad.
On the other hand, Alistair has gotten freakishly better in those years, and suspiciously bigger. Personal steroid beliefs aside, the man is a great fighter. Heavy, technical boxing that can put anyone to sleep at any time. Let’s also not forget that he owns most of his wins by submission.
Brett definitely has that one punch knck out mystique, but Alistair is a tried and true, well rounded beast of a fighter.

And btw I didn’t mean ‘watch Best of Pride and get mixed up?’ as an insult, because it happened to me. After reading it, it sounds like I’m coming off as a snobby dickhead, but I was watching it on Spike and it made it seem like all the fights happened a year ago or something. I was feeling like Sakuraba and Wanderlei were still the best, but then I remembered how friggen long ago it actually was.

Until anything regarding a Strikeforce event is deemed official and finalized, this is all talk. Read the article sourced for this piece, and neither the Overeem/Rogers fight nor the possible Dream fight have been signed. Not even sure if there has been an announcement as to where and when the supposed Strikeforce event will take place, who will be on the card, and how/by what media outlet it will be disseminated, CBS, Showtime, PPV?
A non-title fight seems fitting, as Overeem has done all he can to quash any sense that the Strikeforce heavyweight title represents anything to anyone…

yep you’re right, gotta give props to Sarah, she’s a bad mother lover
and with reference to Chuck knocking out Alistair, Alistair almost won that fight, he had already dropped chuck and must have been way ahead with the judges. Didnt he do something daft like drop his hands and beckon chuck to hit him, just before chuck hit him? in the forehead?
shit Chuck actually took a beating in all three of his Pride fights, Guy Mezger even dropped Chuck in the first before getting KO’d

Yeah after watching Chuck vs Overeem agani it looked like Chuck was in a lot of trouble early as Overeem was kicking his ass. It just seems the only thing holding Overeem back is his chin. And Guy Mezger looked really good also but the dude was just hugh in his fight with Chuck. Love that drug policy over in Japan.

If STRIKEFORCE wants to gain credibility then they need to stop the non title fights when their champions are fighting unless perhaps it’s a catchweight bout between 2 of their superstars. Also it’s absolutely ridiculous that their so-called heavyweight champion won the title by beating Paul Buentello(in November 2007) and even more ridiculous that he’s never defended it in the 2 1/2 yrs he’s been champion. I don’t care if ppl think Rogers deserves a shot at the title or not. That’s a different argument altogether. If he’s fighting Overeem then it should certainly be for the title with the winner fighting the winner of the Fedor Emelianenko/Fabricio Werdum fight.

Overeem by KO round 1.
They should have given Arlovsky another shot at Brett before letting Brett fight Overeem, IMO. Whatever though……Strikforce is a paradox.

This is more likely Overeem by sub. Rogers will never see it coming…or then again he might, and bash Alistair’s face inside his crabium…. …Nah, I’m taking Overeem for this one.
