One fighter has already signed the bout agreement and the other is expected to sign this week according to a recent report from Fighters Only.
The bout will take place on Silva’s thirty-fourth birthday, July 3, during the same event that UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is expected to make his return.
The pair had been expected to face off at UFC 110 in Australia before Michael Bisping was tapped to replace Akiyama.
Akiyama has wanted this match-up for quite some time now – refusing other potential match-ups in hopes of pinning the fight with Wanderlei down – and now he will get his wish.
Silva will be looking to make it two in a row inside of the octagon with a recent unanimous decision victory over Michael Bisping at UFC 110, while Akiyama is currently riding a three fight win streak, with his most recent appearance being a “Fight of the Night” splkit decision victory over Alan Belcher during UFC 100.
