Former UFC heavyweight champion and Pride standout Josh Barnett will return to action in a bout with Brazilian slugger Geronimo dos Santos on July 10 in Brisbane, Australia. The match-up will headline a brand new promotion called Impact Fighting Championships.
A recent report making its rounds on the web via Brazilian MMA site Tatame stated the match-up would happen under the Strikeforce banner; however this blunder was quickly rectified by all parties involved and posted on Tatame later the same day.
“I’m sorry, I was wrong,” said dos Santos. “I signed the contract, the fight will be against Josh Barnett, but it’ll be at Impact MMA, a new event in Australia… If I win I’ll sign with Strikeforce, I’m so thrilled that I said everything wrong.”
Dos Santos (17-8-0) plies his trade in Brazilian regional shows and has won eight out of his last nine fights.
Barnett (25-5-0) has won his last five on the trot, most recently submitting Mighty Mo with a first round kimura at Dream 13 in Japan. Despite holding impressive victories over the likes of Randy Couture and Minotoro Nogueira, his reputation has taken a battering lately after testing positive for anabolic steroids in July 2009.
The Impact FC card will be offered live on pay-per-view in North America.
