22-year old Stefan Struve improved his record to 20-4 earlier tonight during the ”UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen” preliminary bouts with an impressive comeback TKO of the previously undefeated Christian Morecraft.
Morecraft, who found success from the top after an early takedown during the fight’s opening five minutes, was unable to finish things and eventually fell victim to a well-placed combination from the 6’11 heavyweight twenty-two seconds into the second stanza for his first taste of professional defeat. Struve is now 3-1 in the UFC with a pair of finishing performances.
Meanwhile, Rick Story scored the biggest win of his career by finishing respected submission-specialist Dustin Hazelett a little over a minute into their fight’s second round. Story was able to neutralize Hazelett’s attack from guard throughout the first round before landing a few big strikes in the second for the TKO victory. The win was Story’s fourth straight in the Octagon.
In other action, two-time NCAA champion wrestler Johny Hendricks made a strong recovery after a mediocre opening round against opponent Charlie Brenneman. Hendricks, who struggled to find his rhythm in the first frame, landed a barrage of punches less than a minute into the second setting up the eventual TKO finish and preserving his perfect record (9-0).
Hendricks fellow amateur champ and multi-time All-American grappler Phil Davis rolled as expected against Rodney Wallace. “Mr. Wonderful”, who entered the bout as a tremendous favorite, channeled his inner-glow and dominated “Sho Nuff” from start to finish. The winning performance was the seventh of Davis’ career and maintained his undefeated status.
