Twenty-one of the twenty-two fighters scheduled to compete tomorrow night at WEC 52 stepped on the scale in Las Vegas and made weight, though the promotion’s second-to-last event is still expected to go off as originally scheduled.
Fan-favorite Urijah Faber came in at 136 pounds for his bantamweight debut, as well as his final WEC fight, against widely respected 135-pounder Takeya Mizugaki. Mizugaki also registered at 136 pounds. Faber is 23-4 but picked up three of the losses in his previous five bouts, the most-recent of which came in the form of an injury-riddled unanimous decision defeat to 145-pound phenom Jose Aldo at WEC 48 this past April.
Faber’s protege and Alpha Male teammate, Joseph Benavidez, measured in at 136 pounds for his fight against 14-2 Brazilian Wagney Fabiano (who matched his weight). Benavidez will be looking to bounce back from the split-decision loss suffered to bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz last August at WEC 50.
