Roxanne Modafferi fighting Hitomi Akano at “SRC – Soul of Fight”

Two of the top female grapplers in Mixed Martial Arts will join a number of recognizable competitors at Sengoku’s “SRC – Soul of Fight” event, as Roxanne Modafferi vs. Hitomi Akano has been added to the December 30 line-up scheduled for Tokyo, Japan. The match-up marks the promotional debut for both women.

News of the notable pairing was announced earlier today by Modafferi via Twitter.

Both fighters will be looking to get back on track after having recently fallen in Strikeforce to a pair of highly respected opponents with Akano being out-pointed by Miesha Tate in the final round of the promotion’s welterweight tournament last August and Modafferi knocked out by a vicious slam from former divisional champion Sarah Kaufman in July.

Prior to the loss “The Happy Warrior” had won seven of her eight previous fights including an impressive decision victory over Tara LaRosa this past May. Known for her positive disposition and infectious smile as much as her ground-based technique, Modafferi is 15-6 in her career and holds a 2007 win over current 135-pound Strikeforce champ Marloes Coenen from the final of a single-night Grand Prix. She has won the bulk of her fights by way of decision with four submissions to her credit as well. Equally accomplished on the mat, the 16-8 Akano tapped Carina Damm out shortly before losing to Tate and owes thirteen of her sixteen victories to submissions.

Headlining “SRC – Soul of Fight”, 145-pound champ Marlon Sandro will take on Shooto title-holder Hatsu Hioki in a featherweight super-fight with Kazuo Misaki, Keita Nakamura, Mamed Khalidov, and Dave Herman set to throw down in earlier bouts.
