Hatsu Hioki crowned new SRC featherweight champ with decision win over Marlon Sandro

The first of three major Mixed Martial Arts shows celebrating this week’s change in calendar took place overnight in Tokyo as “SRC – Soul of Fight” offered a whopping seventeen match-ups for fans’ enjoyment with one notable bout, unfortunately, being scrapped at the last minute due to illness.

Though Roxanne Modafferi had openly expressed her excitement in facing Hitomi Akano at the event, as well as the sacrifices she’d made to be in Japan over the holidays, in the end her hopes of victory were derailed by fever and other symptoms related to gastritis. Akano and Modafferi got as far as the ring before their fight was called off leaving both talented females in a visibly emotional state based on their overwhelming disappointment at the way things ultimately unfolded.

In news registering on the other end of the sadness scale, 27-year old Hatsu Hioki won the SRC featherweight strap with an otherworldly performance against Brazilian stand-out Marlon Sandro featuring a combination of crisp striking and submission-grappling at times leaving the BJJ black-belt answerless in return. While Hioki was close to submitting Sandro late in the title-fight on more than one occasion, the Nova Uniao competitor refused to tap and eventually found defeat as a result of the judges’ scorecards. The win brought Hioki’s overall record to 23-4-2 and was his third consecutive victory.

Also worth pointing out, Megumi Fujii bounced back from her first career defeat to out-point Emi Fujino at the event, Mamed Khalidov flattened Yuki Saski in the first round with strikes, and PRIDE/UFC veteran Ryo Chonan was separated from consciousness nineteen seconds into his fight against late-replacement Taisuke Okuno. Dave Herman, Kazuo Misaki, and Keita Nakamura also emerged winners in their respective “SRC – Soul of Fight” match-ups.
