Florian’s first featherweight test coming in form of Diego Nunes

Before officially announcing his move down to 145 pounds former UFC lightweight contender Ken Florian had been rumored for a potential showdown with featherweight champion Jose Aldo. With a drop in weight since confirmed it appears Florian will not face Aldo in his divisional debut but rather a teammate of the dynamic Brazilian’s at Nova Uniao – Diego Nunes.

The 13-5 “Ken Flo” revealed his future plans on the latest episode of ESPN’s MMA Live where he also revealed his expectation of seeing Nunes in the Octagon at UFC 131 in June. The event is currently rumored to take place in Vancouver on June 11 with a headlining bout between Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos.

Nunes holds an overall record of 16-1 and has won his last three fights including a split decision over Mike Brown at UFC 125 in his last outing. The 28-year old also holds victories over Rafael Assuncao and Tyler Toner from his time in WEC before joining the post-merge UFC roster.

Though UFC 131 will mark Florian’s first foray into featherweight he has long been considered one of the top 155 pounders in MMA with past success in the ring against respected competitors like Takanori Gomi, Roger Huerta, Joe Lauzon, Joe Stevenson, and Clay Guida. In addition to the impressive list of foes he’s felled, twelve of Florian’s thirteen wins have also been the result of a finishing performance.
