Sean McCorkle released by the UFC

The UFC’s roster took a hit in both sexiness and hilarity this week when the organization handed heavyweight Sean McCorkle his walking papers after having been beaten in back-to-back outings.

Five Ounces of Pain confirmed McCorkle’s free agency with a source close to the fighter.

The soundbyte-friendly “Big Sexy” racked up nine straight wins before making his UFC debut in successful fashion by submitting PRIDE veteran Mark Hunt a little more than a minute into the opening round of their bout last September at UFC 119. However, McCorkle was left defenseless from strikes by Stefan Struve after an epic amount of trash-talk between the two through media in his follow-up appearance and was most recently choked out by Christian Morecraft a few weeks ago at UFN 24.

McCorkle, who has a strong following based on his online accessibility and humorous observations, exits the UFC with a 10-2 record overall and nine finishing performances.

  • Dufresne says:

I don’t think McCorkle was quite ready for the UFC, even if he did get a win in his first appearance. He may have been 9-0 before the UFC, but if you look at the guys he fought that’s not saying much. Only one of the guys he fought pre-UFC has a winning record (Jeremy Norton; 14-5) and that win was a split decision. The four guys he fought immediately prior to signing with the UFC have a combined record of 46-76, and even with Norton included his opponents before Hunt have a combined record of 69-92 so it’s not exactly like he was fighting top notch competition. And lets not forget that even his win in the UFC wasn’t exactly against the creme da la creme. Mark Hunt is 6-7 with 6 submission losses and came into that fight on a 5 fight losing spree, so tapping out Hunt isn’t the biggest and brightest feather you could put in your cap.

I’ll miss his trash talking, but until I see him fight, and beat, quality opponents, I think he’s vastly overrated.

Plus they just brought in Pee Wee, so the role of big, funny HW is filled.

More memorable for his Twitter account than his octagon appearances….

Would have been an excellent fight for Pee Wee actually.

Oah well. I’ll miss him. I hope he gets a few circuit wins and ends up with MFC or Bellator or Shine or at least Tachi Palace…..some place where I can still see him at least. He’s funny and entertaining in a lot of respects, IMO.
