It’s definitely been a week to remember for Danny Downes. This past Friday, he picked up a first round submission victory over Tory Bogguess and today he found out that he’ll be making his UFC debut in June. Downes has been tapped to replace Jonathan Brookins, suffering an eye injury, against Jeremy Stephens at the Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale.
UFC made the announcement earlier today.
This isn’t the first time Downes has stepped up on short notice. Almost one year ago he took on Chris Horodecki on just a weeks notice at WEC 49, making his WEC debut. Despite the loss, Downes was brought back by the WEC and defeated Zhang Tie Quan at the final WEC event in December. Downes will hope to have a more memorable short notice debut this time around, which won’t be an easy task against the heavy handed Stephens.
For Brookins, this makes the second time he’s had to pull out of his scheduled post-Ultimate Fighter 12 debut. He was originally scheduled to fight at UFC 129 against John Makdessi but was forced out with an injury. He hasn’t competed since this past December when he won the Ultimate Fighter 12.
The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale is scheduled for June 4 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will be headlined by a lightweight clash between top contenders Anthony Pettis and Clay Guida.
