For the first time since September 2007, UFC fans will be able to enjoy a title fight free on television. This time around though, it will be live on Versus as UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz will put his title on the line against top contender Demetrious Johnson. The fight will headline the sixth installment of UFC Live on the Versus network.
News of the bout was first reported by NBCSports.com and has since been confirmed by the UFC.
Bantamweight king “The Dominator” made his UFC debut this past July, avenging the only loss of his career and retaining his strap against fan favorite Urijah Faber in a “Fight of the Night” effort. Cruz is undefeated since dropping to 135 in 2008, picking up eight victories along the way. His confusing striking style, along with his speed and quick takedowns, has made him a tough match up for opponents to figure out.
If there’s anyone that can match the speed of Cruz in the division though, it’s “Mighty Mouse.” Johnson is currently on a four fight win streak including wins over former top ranked featherweight “Kid” Yamamoto and former WEC 135 champion Miguel Torres. With only one career loss, what Johnson lacks in size, he makes up for in quickness and relentlessness.
UFC Live 6 is scheduled for October 1 at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. Along with the bantamweight title fight, a rematch between lightweights Matt Wiman and Mac Danzig is expected for the event.
