The latest MMA promotion’s attempt to recapture the magic of PRIDE came and went this morning with a card full of finishes and featuring a handful of impressive performances though lacking the candy-coated pageantry of the iconic Japanese organization.
Among the winners at ONE FC, an event featuring a combination of Unified and PRIDE rules, was UFC veteran Yoshiyuki Yoshida who dominated another man familiar with the Octagon, Phil Baroni, for the bulk of their bout with superior grappling and clearly better conditioning. Baroni looked tired early on – no surprise to those who have followed his career – and couldn’t stop Yoshida’s relentless ground-based attack. Yoshida picked up a decision win in the end, his second straight victory after having endured of a trio of defeats prior to his recent success.
“I f*cked up tonight. I paced myself too much. I was a beat behind. I didn’t go for it I didn’t keep my back off the cage. I’m sorry I let my fans down,” a clearly dejected Baroni later Tweeted about the performance.
Also looking solid at the show was 10-1 Filipino fighter Eduard Folayang who made it five in a row after outpointing A Sol Kwon in the night’s main event. Folayang endured some superficial damage early in the fight to control the action throughout, often driving his opponent backwards with well-timed punches and kicks.
