Things get heated at UFC 137 weigh-ins between BJ Penn and Nick Diaz

In the infamous words of Bruce Buffer, it’s tiiiiiiiiiiiiiime…for another UFC event that kicks of a stretch of consecutive shows!

Set to unfold from Las Vegas, UFC 137 is headlined by former champions Nick Diaz and BJ Penn throwing down with a number of other interesting match-ups to be found as well including Donald Cerrone vs. Dennis Siver, Tyson Griffin vs. Bart Palaszewski, Roy Nelson vs. Mirko Flipovic, and Matt Mitrione vs. Cheick Kongo.

However, before the fighters can face off in the Octagon they have to step on the scale in hopes of making weight and seeing their bouts become official. Though the majority of the bunch hit their marks, Griffin actually came in three pounds heavy for his fight and has been some additional time to drop the weight.

Two highlights from the festivities involved a heated staredown between the headliners where the two welterweights had to be separated after making contact, shoving each other in the process, as well as Nelson wearing a fat-suit on the scale to disguise his weight.

Check out some video of the minor skirmish between Penn/Diaz:

Roy Nelson in a fat suit….

This sounds like one of those things that needs to be explained in an Xzybit meme pic.

Id love to know what Dana said to Roy, after he left the scales. You could see him smerking, but I could not make out what he said.

  • total gamesmanship by Diaz and Penn…that was broken up way faster than many more intense staredowns where there was noted bad blood between the fighters…still gonna be a helluva fight…Nick looks like he put on a little muscle in his downtime

That’s cause Diaz is known for actually fighting opponents outside of the cage. Dana has to keep a tighter leash on his less professional fighters.

The BJ/Diaz thing was for the cameras. Spark things up for the crowd a bit. BJ didn’t seem too upset about it and just kind of stood back when separated. Diaz is a bit nutty and if he really had bad blood with BJ there would have been a much bigger scuffle.

Either way should be a great fight.
