After back-to-back weeks on TV, the UFC returns to PPV this weekend with a stacked UFC 139 line up. Before the fighters step into the octagon though, they’ll step in front of the microphone and answer questions from the media one last time at the final pre-fight press conference.
Scheduled to take the stage are six of the top fighters in the sport today including main event participants Dan Henderson and Mauricio Rua, co-main event strikers Wanderlei Silva and Cung Le, and bantamweight scrappers Urijah Faber and Brian Bowles.
As always, Five Ounces of Pain will be on the conference call when it starts at 4:00 PM EST, ready to relay highlights back to readers in real time in addition to any scintillating soundbytes springing forth from the festivities.
Read below for UFC 139 press conference highlights:
*Says he enjoyed his time in Strikeforce and doesn’t regret leaving UFC for them. “I wasn’t sure I was coming back to the UFC until Dana bought Strikeforce because he missed me.”
*Doesn’t think he’ll be fighting until he’s the age of Randy Couture, but will compete as long as his body lets him.
*When asked the difference between training for a 5 round fight and a 3 round fight he says, “The difference is 2 rounds.”
*Isn’t concerned with getting a title shot. Only focussed on Shogun.
*Is happy to be fighting on the same card as Wanderlei. Hopes they can both win. Says his favorite Wanderlei fight was the rematch against Ricardo Arona.
*Says being sidelined for a year is tough in a one man sport and thinks that was the biggest difference in the fight against Jon Jones.
*Will continue to train hard and fight the best.
*Always expected to fight Henderson, because Henderson is one of the best.
*The extra 2 rounds didn’t change his training, because he always trains to go past 3 rounds.
*Thinks having champions from Brazil has helped the popularity of the sport in the country.
*”If Shogun is 100%, he can be a champion again.” Says his favorite Shogun fight was against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in PRIDE.
*Calls his last fight a learning experience. Has made some improvements and is ready for Cung.
*Wanted to fight again soon after his last fight so was very happy to accept a fight against Cung.
*Thinks San Jose loves MMA so much because AKA has so many great fighters.
*”After this fight, people will know me for my kicks.”
*Talks about his first training session with Dan Henderson where he only knew wrestling and no jiu-jitsu. He got handled. Calls Hendo a pirate, which is a compliment.
*Is not a fan of the judging in his fight with Dominick Cruz. Feels he won, but the judges didn’t really know what they were seeing.
*Is aware of how dangerous Bowles is and is prepared for him.
*Wouldn’t mind fighting to the death. “I’m never gonna quit, so the more rounds the better.”
*Is fine with being the quiet champion and not “the cool kid in school.”
*Thinks Faber vs. Cruz 2 was very close but thinks the judges got the decision right.
