Michael Chandler submits Eddie Alvarez at Bellator 58 to become lightweight champion

The UFC may be offering up an event tonight with former champions adorning the main card but Bellator is back this week with a lineup featuring two of the promotion’s current title-holders including one with his gold on the line.

Coming to fans live from Hollywood, Florida, Bellator 58 was highlighted by lightweight ace Eddie Alvarez putting his gold up for grabs against undefeated tournament winner Michael Chandler. Also scheduled to scrap on the card, explosive 185-pound champ Hector Lombard took on seasoned veteran Trevor Prangley in a co-headlining clash.

Chandler and Alvarez turned in one of the year’s best fights after battling it out for the better part of four rounds including a number of instances where both men appeared to have the bout won. The undefeated Chandler dropped Alvarez twice in the opening round but saw momentum slip away in the following frames before catching his second wind, dropping his decorated adversary, and working his way into a Rear-Naked Choke to become the *NEW* Bellator Lightweight Champion.

Meanwhile, Lombard looked sharp against Prangley, damaging him early and sealing the deal early in the second stanza. The win brought his unbeaten streak to twenty-five in a row with twenty straight victories.

  • Bellator has had some incredible happenings as of late. From Lima knocking out everyone he touches to Eddie Alvarez losing his title in a fight that was just incredible…they really need to up their production values and commentary team. But if they do that the UFC will attack them which would be cool to see some of the Bellator guys in the UFC(Can I get a hell yeah on Lombard vs. Leben or Belcher?!) but it would suck to see another org fold.
Sandro vs. Dias was a fun fight too.
Hector needs to go to a bigger pond. Right now he’s the big fish throwin out impressive wins over garbage/soso competition. I’d love to see him and Vitor.

Doesn’t change anything I was saying, and being #5 isn’t top of the food chain. Now he’s just below that, and Mike Chandler is a freaking beast. I mean how far has that guy’s striking come in a year?
