Emotional Wanderlei Silva discusses win over Cung Le moments after UFC 139 bout

For longtime fans of Mixed Martial Arts this past Saturday night was special for reasons beyond the incredible main event. While there’s little question Dan Henderson’s dance with Mauricio Rua was as good a fight as the last few years have produced, it was the bout preceding the headliner bringing true satisfaction for many after Wanderlei Silva came away with a convincing win over Cung Le in a match-up almost certainly marking his last inside the Octagon had it gone differently.

UFC cameras caught up with an emotional Silva shortly after his victory at UFC 139 where “The Axe Murderer” discussed his performance, reflected on how much the win meant to him, and expressed heartfelt appreciation for the love his fans had shown him throughout his career.

“I want to thank the support that all you guys gave me. I have no words to thank you. All you guys stood by me in defeat and now stand by me in victory. I have only to thank you all. I’m very happy to be able to bring happiness to my fans. And the message is no matter how much people say you can’t do it and that you are old and done you have to keep believing,” said Silva while wiping a tear away from his eye. “The message is believe in your dreams, work hard, and pray. And the result will come.”

  • Watching videos like this still surprise me sometimes. This is the most violent man in MMA history hands down, I still get nightmares when i watch him soccer kick Sakuraba…or knee rampage 20 plus times…or five times to let his limp body fall through the ropes…or when he stomped Fujita into a pile of rubble…
Yet when the guy speaks of his training partners, fans, family, friends and even opponents he speaks about them with a genuine niceness that is truly shocking if you didnt know any better.
The man is still truly one of the finest ambassadors for the sport and possibly the most exciting fighter to ever grace a ring, cage, octagon, hexagon or any other structure where fights take place. I wish he could fight forever.

There’s always been something about Wanderlei that just makes me want to shake the guy’s hand and just give him the most sincere “thanks” I can. I cannot help but appreciate all the amazing battles I’ve seen courtesy of Mr. Silva.

superdavenorcal, I have to say that your comments are bang on, I love Wandy and he along with Shogun and Fedor are my three all-time favourites.

On a personal note though I am one of those that wish he’d walk away before he gets hurt really bad. He’s in my opinion hands down the most exciting fighter of all-time but aside from his impressive win Saturday he is sadly a severely toned down version of his old self.

Knowing that Wandy is a true competitor he will fight on, I thank him for all the exciting fights he’s given us, but I watch his fights now with a little anxiety hoping and praying that he does well.

Niv, I think everyone gets that same feeling; anyone who had the slightest clue who Wanderlei is, anyway.

Man, I horribly miscalled that fight. I gave Wandy little chance against a technical striker like Le. But, he fought smart, kept from getting hit, and blasted Le when there were openings. I was definitely impressed with his performance and I hope he’s successful for many fights to come.
