It seems as if Strikeforce will survive, at least based on some recent comments made by middleweight champion Luke Rockhold who is appears to be looking at defending his title for the first time since winning it with Tim Kennedy serving as an opponent.
Rockhold defeated Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza for the title back in September, claiming a decision victory. The American Kickboxing Academy student is currently 8-1, having won his last seven fights.
Kennedy, who served for years in the U.S. Army while simultaneously being a MMA fighter, defeated Robbie Lawler and Melvin Manhoef over this past year. He is 6-1 in his last seven fights with the lone loss coming at the hands of Souza.
“I think Tim Kennedy is out there, and from what I’ve been told, that’s probably my next fight,” said Rockhold, in a recent interview with Tatame. “Nothing’s official, but they told me to get into training camp and get ready. So, I’m thinking January I’ll be fighting.”
Rockhold is glad to be the Strikeforce title-holder and enjoys competing for the company, but he still has his sights on joining the UFC down the road.
“Like I said, nothing’s official,” Rockhold said. “I look forward to going to the UFC (one day). I think me, Kennedy and “Jacare” would be very well in the UFC.”
