Heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga returning to the Octagon at UFC 142

Former UFC title-contender Gabriel Gonzaga has won his way back into the promotion after being announced as an injury replacement for Rob Broughton.

Gonzaga will face Ednaldo Oliveira at UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes on January 14 from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In his last bout, Gonzaga (12-6) downed Parker Porter via submission in the third round. The fight marked his first since being cut from the UFC following losses to Shane Carwin, current UFC heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos, and Brendan Schaub, then vowing to only compete in BJJ tournaments.

His retirement from MMA didn’t last long, however, and Gonzaga took the Porter bout. Now, “Napao” and his four-fight UFC contract get Oliveira who is 15-7-1 but lost his last two bouts after a five-fight win streak.

UFC 142 will feature Jose Aldo defending his featherweight title against Chad Mendes on pay-per-view. No word has surfaced on whether the Gonzaga-Broughton bout will make the PPV card or head to the FX-televised prelim portion of the night.

  • SICK! Welcome back Big Nose! The most talented HW that never accomplished big things aside from knockin out Mirko….if he goes to a better camp and works harder on his head movement this dude can still be a monster.

I wanna see him and Barnett

Gabe’s UFC career is a big disappointment. The eye-test depicts him as a solid UFC fighter, but his track record suggests otherwise. I still hold out a glimmer of hope for good things from him, but as a legitimate title contender …. NO.
Time generally provides great perspective. A few years later, Couture’s run at the title through Timmy and Gabe doesn’t seem all that impressive anymore.

Uhhh, yeah, what’s up with that?

I like Gabe, but I can’t say he’ll break into the top ranks anytime soon, and that’s OK. Every other division has guys that will never be champion or even make it into title contention like Gonzaga did, and they’re still kept around cause they’re good, relatively exciting fighters. Why can’t we have a few of those guys in the HW division?
Does Gabe have the potential to be top 10? Maybe. Is he a good test/fight for guys like Pee Wee, Broughton, Mitrione, Nelson, etc.? Absolutely.

If Gonzaga could remember he’s got elite, world class BJJ instead of trying to be a boxer, his record would probably be more impressive. He lost all 3 rounds of standup to Schaub, but the one time he went for a takedown he managed to scramble and get Schaub’s back in seconds. The problem was that he went for the takedown with about 5 seconds left. If he had done that even 30 seconds earlier in a 15:00 fight, he would have easily won.

I see the same kind of situation in this fight: If Gonzaga decides to and manages to take Oliveira to the ground he should take home an easy W and possibly a Submission of the Night bonus. If he tries to stand with Oliveira, who has 9 of his 13 wins coming by strikes, he could easily be on the wrong end of a KO of the Night bonus.
