Mark Hunt vs. Stefan Struve completes heavyweight-heavy UFC 146

Another interesting heavyweight match-up has been signed for UFC 146, as promotional officials have confirmed Mark Hunt will meet Stefan Struve at the Memorial Day Weekend event.

Their pairing rounds out what marks the first all-heavyweight main card with five bouts being featured on the May 26 PPV broadcast from Las Vegas. In the main event, Junior dos Santos will defend his title against Alistair Overeem, while the co-headliner features former champs Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez clashing in a #1 contender’s fight.

Hunt has won three of his four fights inside the Octagon since joining the organization rather than having his original PRIDE contract paid out, including a victory over Cheick Kongo in his last match as well as a win over Ben Rothwell. Comparably, Struve (23-5) is 7-3 inside the Octagon with success against Pat Barry, Christian Morecraft, and most recently Dave Herman.

The other two heavyweight tilts scheduled for UFC 146 include Roy Nelson taking on Antonio Silva and Gabriel Gonzaga giving it a go against unbeaten Strikeforce prospect Shane Del Rosario.

  • Well this goes one of two ways….either Hunt hunts down that chin and Stefan goes to sleep quick or Stefan survives a few of Mark’s biggest shots and gets a sick sub late in the fight when Hunt gasses. either way should be entertaining and I hope Struve pulls it off….That kid will wear gold someday…i know it.

For some reason I don’t like Struve and want him to lose every time he fights.

Struve should win with a sub, but IMO Kongo was supposed to win with wrestling. That didn’t work out too well.

Struve has a habit of taking damage in all of his fights; Hunt won’t have to touch him much to put him out.

I guess that was just really long-winded way of saying that I am looking forward to this fight.

Gotta agree with everyone else that Hunt has a better than average chance of putting Struve to sleep in the first. After that, I think Struve takes it. If Hunt does get the W, that makes Rothwell, Kongo, and Struve in his last three. Is he ready for a top 10 at that point?

I love the way Struve fights, even with a average chin he goes after guys and puts it on the line. Hunt should get the KO but if Struve gets him down he is pretty good with subs so either way it will be a great fight to watch.

If Hunt wins this then not only will the fanboy in me be damn happy, but I think top 10 consideration wouldn’t be far-fetched. It’s not like the heavyweight division is exceedingly deep.

  • Absolutely…and the same goes for Stefan.

Wait, are you saying that he BELONGS in the top 10 or that he should FIGHT a top 10? I think he should Fight a top 10, but I wouldn’t consider him top 10 unless he wins at least two more after this.
Struve would be borderline with a win, IMO.

Struve has been flattened before, but he showed he’s got a decent chin last time out when Pee Wee tagged him pretty good multiple times, only to see Struve keep on keepin’ on and eventually finish him.

Hunt will always have the proverbial puncher’s chance but Struve has no business losing this fight. Of course, I said the same thing about Kongo…so yeah. But whereas Kongo is aging & fading fast, Struve just turned 24 and seems to improve just about every time out. Hunt’s little run comes to an end.

Are there even 10 heavyweights with name value?

If you count the SF heavys that are sure to be there in the next 6 months you could dig up 10.

JDS, Overeem, Cain, Werdum, Bigfoot, Mir, Carwin, Big Nog, and Schaub as names. With Russow, Del Rosario, Browne and Griggs all knocking on the door of the UFC top 10 and Barnett, Cormier, and Fedor outside the UFC.
The fact that a guy like Struve ISN’T top 10 says more about the awesome quality of the HW divsion these days then it does anything else.

It’s going to be an awesome card… nice match making.

  • I was saying that with this win Struve deserves a top ten….just like Hunt….IMO struve has been more impressive…he’d’ve subbed rothwell
