Dong Hyun Kim welcomes Demian Maia to UFC’s welterweight division at UFC 148

Demian Maia‘s decision to move down to welterweight from middleweight caught many by surprise. Now, the one-time challenger to Anderson Silva‘s reign as 185-pound champion, has an opponent for his 170-pound debut, as Dong Hyun Kim and Maia will mix it up at UFC 148.

UFC officials have confirmed both the match-up and attached event.

Maia (15-4) is coming off a setback at the hands of Chris Weidman leaving him to ponder a change in scenery given his undersized stature for the division. The BJJ black-belt started his career with five submission victories inside the Octagon but has struggled as of late, losing two of his last three bouts.

In Kim, Maia will be facing the man known as “Stun Gun.” Since entering the UFC in 2008, Kim (15-1-1) has won six fights, falling only to Carlos Condit. Among his victories are those against Matt Brown, Amir Sadollah, and Nate Diaz.

UFC 148, scheduled to take place July 7 from Las Vegas, will feature UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz defending his title against Urijah Faber. with other planned pairings including Tito Ortiz-Forrest Griffin, Rich Franklin-Cung Le, and Michael Bisping-Tim Boetsch.

This is a pretty tough first fight for Maia as Kim has great TDD, I think Maia take it by decision but it will be a rough one.

If Maia fights like his last fight, Kim wont have to worry about take downs

Stungun may be one of the most Underrated fighters in the UFC. He’s only been defeated once in 17 fights, stopped Nate Diaz’s climb up the WW ladder, and his only loss is to the guy that now holds the interim title.
Maia is an incredible Ju-Jitsu master, but Kim no slouch on the ground. If Kim keeps this on the feet he’s gonna take the Dec. or win by (T)KO.

  • Hell No, Maia needs to get good or get gone. He hasnt looked right since Nate sent him flipping through the air.

For what it’s worth, I recall rumours that he had a flu — or similar illness — leading up to his most recent fight.

Regardless, he has seemed a little more tentative since Nate blasted him into the next week.
