Demian Maia‘s decision to move down to welterweight from middleweight caught many by surprise. Now, the one-time challenger to Anderson Silva‘s reign as 185-pound champion, has an opponent for his 170-pound debut, as Dong Hyun Kim and Maia will mix it up at UFC 148.
UFC officials have confirmed both the match-up and attached event.
Maia (15-4) is coming off a setback at the hands of Chris Weidman leaving him to ponder a change in scenery given his undersized stature for the division. The BJJ black-belt started his career with five submission victories inside the Octagon but has struggled as of late, losing two of his last three bouts.
In Kim, Maia will be facing the man known as “Stun Gun.” Since entering the UFC in 2008, Kim (15-1-1) has won six fights, falling only to Carlos Condit. Among his victories are those against Matt Brown, Amir Sadollah, and Nate Diaz.
UFC 148, scheduled to take place July 7 from Las Vegas, will feature UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz defending his title against Urijah Faber. with other planned pairings including Tito Ortiz-Forrest Griffin, Rich Franklin-Cung Le, and Michael Bisping-Tim Boetsch.
