Gian Villante and Derrick Mehmen appear to be on track to compete May 19 from San Jose at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier.
The card, set to take place inside the HP Pavilion and air live on Showtime, will feature the final in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier will meet for the title in the event, as the two have been waiting several months to finish off the tournament after Cormier suffered a broken hand. Villante (9-3) and Mehmen (12-4) are likely headed to the prelims for the show.
Villante told Newsday that he had signed on to fight Mehmen. The former football and wrestling standout at Hofstra University holds a 2-2 mark for Strikeforce, falling to Chad Griggs and Lorenz Larkin.
Mehmen, meanwhile, was defeated this past weekend against former UFC fighter Rodney Wallace at WMMA 1. He won his Strikeforce debut last year over Roy Jones.
