Rafael Cavalcante-Mike Kyle slated for May 19 Strikeforce event

With Gilbert Melendez and Josh Thomson already booked to face off for the Strikeforce lightweight title, another bout with championship implications was also signed in the form of Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante-Mike Kyle.

Cavalcante-Kyle will take place May 19 from San Jose at Strikeforce: Grand Prix Final where Daniel Cormier-Josh Barnett battle it out to lay claim to the last heavyweight standing in the organization’s yearlong tournament. These two have met before, with Kyle scoring an upset knockout in the second round back in 2009. While the Strikeforce light heavyweight belt remains vacant, the match is not expected to be for the gold though it’s likely the winner will end up in a title-bout against Gegard Mousasi with a decisive victory.

“Feijao” held the crown after defeating Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal, but was upended by Dan Henderson in his first defense. Kyle, meanwhile, has hit a rough patch health-wise despite being one of the hottest fighters in the division. He has won six of his last seven fights with the only exception being a defeat to heavyweight Antonio Silva.

Pretty Decent card… doing the best with what they got.

It is looking like a good card. But SF is pretty much putting all its top guys on this card, makes me wonder how they will fill the next two?

Just to finish the thought and see what it looks like on paper, the two SF ‘big cards’ should look like (and followed by a pair of SF Challenger cards):

    May 19th –

Josh Barnett vs. Daniel Cormier (heavyweight grand-prix finale)
Champ Gilbert Melendez vs. Josh Thomson (for lightweight title)
Nate Marquardt vs. Tyron Woodley for WW title
Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante vs. Mike Kyle
    Derrick Mehmen vs. Gian Villante
    Burrell vs Voekler
    Larkin vs Yancy Medeiros
    Bobby Green vs Estevan Payan
    Mein vs Stinson
    Masvidal vs Wilcox
    Evangelista Santos vs Paul Daley
    Sara McMann vs Rin Nakai

June 15th (No UFC events scheduled this weekend)-

Kennedy vs Rockhold for MW title
    Rousey vs Kaufman for title
Souza vs Roger Gracie for #1 MW contender for Souza if he wins
    Lawler vs Brunson
Pat Healy vs JZ for #1 LW contender
Mousasi vs Lima (if Mousasi wins, he fights Feijao/Kyle winner for LHW title)
High vs Saffiedine for #1 WW contender
    KJ Noons vs Fodor
    OSP vs Yoel Romero
    Quinn Mulhern vs Misaki
    Jardine vs Amagov
Meisha Tate vs Alexis Davis (if Meisha is back by then…her arm was not broken, right?)

The other SF fighters/prospects would fight on the Challengers cards in July and August, like Ryan Couture et al as well as rebuilding the featherweight womens division. Strikeforce ‘big cards’ would then be again in Sept and Oct. With most of the same fighters reshuffled so winners fighting winners and losers fighting losers etc. Does this look about right?
