With Gilbert Melendez and Josh Thomson already booked to face off for the Strikeforce lightweight title, another bout with championship implications was also signed in the form of Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante-Mike Kyle.
Cavalcante-Kyle will take place May 19 from San Jose at Strikeforce: Grand Prix Final where Daniel Cormier-Josh Barnett battle it out to lay claim to the last heavyweight standing in the organization’s yearlong tournament. These two have met before, with Kyle scoring an upset knockout in the second round back in 2009. While the Strikeforce light heavyweight belt remains vacant, the match is not expected to be for the gold though it’s likely the winner will end up in a title-bout against Gegard Mousasi with a decisive victory.
“Feijao” held the crown after defeating Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal, but was upended by Dan Henderson in his first defense. Kyle, meanwhile, has hit a rough patch health-wise despite being one of the hottest fighters in the division. He has won six of his last seven fights with the only exception being a defeat to heavyweight Antonio Silva.
