Frank Mir will replace Alistair Overeem in title-fight against Junior dos Santos

It seems UFC President Dana White is not willing to wait another week for an outcome in Alistair Overeem‘s situation with the NSAC. White, following another live episode of The Ultimate Fighter, announced Frank Mir will replace Overeem and face Junior dos Santos for the heavyweight title at UFC 146 on May 26.

Overeem is currently scheduled to go before the Nevada State Athletic Commission next week in hopes of obtaining his fight license while explaining a drug test he failed for an extraordinarily high level of testosterone in his system.

“Taking off to Atlanta!!!! May 26th is now Mir vs. JDS for the HW title in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand,” White wrote on his Twitter account.

It remains to be seen what will happen now with Overeem or Cain Velasquez. Velasquez was scheduled to face Mir in a #1 contender match on the same card. MMAFighting confirmed withVelasquez’s management that the former champ will remain on the card. However, no new opponent has been booked for the vacancy created by Mir.

Dos Santos posted on his Twitter account following the announcement, “Dana White just said I get a new opponent to fight on May 26th for the HW title. JDS vs. Mir. Let’s do it.”

Nice. I was hoping they didnt scrap the title fight. Overeem vs cain dont sound bad either.

Despite denials this really seemed the only logical thing to do.

Still think Bigfoot moves up to fight Cain and Big Country fights Hunt. Not sure where that would leave Struve. Not really a legit challenger for Cain unless I am forgetting someone. Not sure putting Bigfoot into a #1 contender match works but, he did have a high profile win over Fedor.

Unless Zuffa puts a late scrap on the SFGP not sure where to find the extra HW on short notice.

Blah. Not really interested in seeing Mir get smashed in another title fight.

I know it reeks of MMA math, but the way so many non-strikers have lit up Mir, I think JDS is going to add to Mir’s growing concussion collection.

Werdum moves up in place of Overeem. That’s at least a legit #1 contender fight. Or as #1 as you can get with Cain having just lost the belt.

Rumour of Nelson fighting Cain for #1 contendership. Maybe Reem decided to cut his losses.

Very difficult fight for Mir to win. I think he will lose in the first unless he pulls a Werdum vs Fedor and gets Jr to follow him to the ground

Roy fighting Cain for the #1 contendership! Hahahahaha! There is no way Roy should be within 4 fights of a #1 contenders fight. He has lost to every top fighter he has ever fought. Against top 25s he is like 1-7 and thats if your generous and include an old and out of form Crocop a top 25. Nelson is not even a good fighter the guy is 5-5 from his last 10 & has lost 3 of his last 4. If he gets a #1 contenders fight….surely it cant be.

I think the rumor about Nelson is him tweeting constantly staying that if they wanted him to step in to fight cain or even JDS he’d do it in a heartbeat. And then the fans retweeting and spamming dana and ufcs twitter saying make it happen.

I hope that’s the case. I didn’t think Hunt deserved the spot, Nelson definitely doesn’t.
