Eddie Alvarez spotted sitting cageside with Dana White at UFC on FOX 3

Former Bellator FC lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez made an appearance at UFC on FOX 3 this past Saturday night, sitting Octagon-side with UFC President Dana White during the main event of the card. The headliner saw Nate Diaz defeat Jim Miller to secure a future shot at the lightweight title, a belt currently worn by Benson Henderson. “Smooth” and former champ Frankie Edgar will face off later this year in a rematch.

The 23-3 Alvarez, a former Bellator title-holder, is still under contract with Bjorn Rebney‘s company but revealed his deal is set to expire very soon and he will likely be exploring his options when it does. As such, he has been rumored for a possible run in the UFC with White even speaking about the possibility in recent weeks.

If the UFC signs Alvarez it will mark the second Bellator star inked to their roster in 2012 after signing Hector Lombard away. Lombard is set to make his Octagon debut in August against Brian Stann.

Alvarez avenged one of the few losses of his career in his last outing by pounding out Shinya Aoki in the opening round.

I think as great as this may be for Frankie, Hector & the UFC it may actually prove to serve BFC just as much in terms of recognition and acknowledgment.

    +1 Rece.

I think Eddie could hang with UFC’s elite 155ers. Hopefully we get to see it.

Wonder what that’ll do to the LW division if he gets the same treatment as Lombard, win one fight and get a title shot.

If Zuffa actually CARED about Strikeforce they’d sign Alvarez to fight Melendez this fall (assuming he beats Josh Thomson in a few weeks).

Sounds like SF doesn’t care either. They basically told Dana to fuck off when he offered to help.

You mean Showtime, not Strikeforce. And Showtime has no say on who Zuffa signs to Strikeforce.

    Fair enough.

Strikeforce seems intent to run on fumes, nonetheless. I mean, their website is a Word document someone saved as an HTML page for crying out loud.

Alvarez is a solid fighter and seems like a nice guy, but I don’t think he has the same buzz as Lombard. Besides, UFC’s lightweight division is pretty deep right now, and I think Alvarez would have his hands full with any of the fighters in the top half, including Cerrone, Nate Diaz, Frankie Edgar, Clay Guida and Gray Maynard.

If every person that sat next to Dana was getting in the UFC, we’d have seen Justin Bieber in the Octagon. I know Dana wants Alvarez, but Fedor was shown at a UFC show, Gomi was shown years before he signed with the UFC, so was Overeem.
I think Eddie in the UFC is a forgone conclusion, but just sitting next to Dana isn’t always what people think it is.
I could actually see Zuffa putting him in a one off with Gilbert. He’s not part of the Showtime contract so pulling him over to the UFC won’t be an issue. If he wins, then they can market him as a top contender and pay Melendez less when they eventually pull him over. And if he looses, well Gilbert is still stuck in SF and they don’t have to pay out so much for Alvarez to get him in the UFC.

Frankly, as long as I get to see Eddie fight then I don’t care where — dude always makes it exciting.

Bieber in the UFC? Awesome! UFC can start a new division: Girlyman weight. Think of all the possibilities.

Looks like Strikeforce heard Faust’s criticism and have since updated their website. Pretty much the same as the UFC’s but definitely progress.
