Phil Davis welcoming Chad Griggs to light heavyweight division at UFC on FOX 4

Chad Griggs‘ debut in the UFC didn’t go so well when he ran into Travis Browne last month in his first fight since coming over from Strikeforce. Griggs started out strong but only lasted half a round, suffering a submission loss midway through the opening frame.

If Phil Davis has anything to say about it, Griggs’ light heavyweight debut will result in a similar outcome.

UFC officials confirmed on Monday Griggs and Davis will meet at UFC on FOX 4. The card is set for August 4 from Los Angeles.

Prior to his loss against Browne “The Grave Digger” had been on a six-fight winning streak with his only other defeat coming in 2007 to Shane Ott. Likewise, Davis (9-1) will also be looking to bounce back from defeat, as former UFC light heavyweight champ Rashad Evans handed “Mr. Wonderful” his first professional loss earlier this year.

UFC on FOX 4 is scheduled to be headlined by Hector Lombard vs. Brian Stann. Where Griggs-Davis will be placed on the card is unknown at this time.

Griggs did look like a small heavyweight, but I think he got way more mileage out of beating Bobby Lashley than was warranted.

I like Griggs a lot and hope this drop to LHW is a good thing for him,, but he has a very tough first fight ahead of him in Davis.

Davis looks kinda scared to throw his hands a little, he needs to work on that, but I don’t know enough about either fighter to really say anything more about the fight…I do like Grigg’s chops though.

    What a ridiculous matchup.

Chad Griggs seems like a great guy. He’s a firefighter in AZ, with a wife & couple of kids. But c’mon, what the hell is the point of matching him up with Davis?

Griggs beat some scrubs in SF, including Lashley, and that combined with his entertaining fighting style & sweet chops this has gotten him some notice. So after being schooled by Travis Browne on the mat (who isn’t a ground guy), they’re handing him over to Phil Davis?

Griggs is unlikely to ever pick up a victory in the octagon, and they’re matching him up with a fringe top-5 guy in the division, who is a horrible matchup for him stylistically? What. The. F*CK?!
