Mark Munoz and Chris Weidman will comprise the main event at UFC on Fuel 4 on July 11, as the two middleweights are slated to square off from San Jose, California. Munoz will be returning to action for the first time since surgery to repair his injured elbow. Since that time, a number of UFC middleweights have proclaimed to be the next contender in the division, including current #1 Chael Sonnen who will face Anderson Silva for the title at UFC 148.
As far as Mike Roberts, the manager for Munoz, is concerned, his fighter has just as much to say about taking that spot as Michael Bisping, Tim Boetsch, or Hector Lombard.
“If, and when, Mark wins this fight, he has to be the #1 contender,” said Roberts during a recent appearance on MMAWeekly Radio. “It makes the most sense.”
Munoz-Weidman will take place four days after Silva-Sonnen II, so the timing could be perfect. However, UFC President Dana White has been high on Lombard, who wore the Bellator middleweight title before signing with the UFC.
On his own resume is four consecutive victories by Munoz with his last loss coming by Split Decision to Yushin Okami in 2010.
