UFC heavyweight Fabricio Werdum understands he’s not next in line for a crack at divisional gold. While Werdum has looked sharp en route to a 2-0 record since returning to the Octagon, the 34-year old Brazilian was outclassed by Alistair Overeem a little more than a year ago and also has Cain Velasquez in front of him as top contender. As such, Werdum is looking to fight again in 2012 with designs on whatever date works for champion Junior dos Santos.
“I’m not picking out opponents. I’ll be ready for each one I’ll have to fight and I’ll do my best against them, whether it’s Frank Mir or Overeem. I want to fight on the same night as (Dos Santos) so that we can fight each other later,” said Werdum in an interview with TATAME.
Meeting Dos Santos in the ring is both a professional and personal quest for Werdum who lost to the debuting “Cigano” in 2008.
“I’m sure these are different times. He’s the best in the world and I’m sure I’ll be better this time too. I wasn’t at my best, so a fight now would be a completely different thing,” explained Werdum. “I’m ready for it.”
