Jamie Varner steps in to meet Joe Lauzon at UFC on FOX 4

Fans might want to start calling Jamie Varner the UFC‘s new “Company Man,” as the ex-WEC champion has stepped up on short notice again. Varner will replace Terry Etim and meet Joe Lauzon in Los Angeles on August 4 at UFC on FOX 4.

The Varner-Lauzon bout will be part of the prelims for the event. The main card is headlined by Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Brandon Vera.

Varner (20-6-1) returned to the UFC earlier this year, accepting a fight with undefeated prospect Edson Barboza with only a few weeks to prepare. The decision was clearly a good one, as Varner knocked Barboza out, earning his third consecutive win and first in the UFC since 2007 as a result.

Lauzon (21-7) is looking to regroup from a loss to Anthony Pettis earlier this year that halted a two-fight winning streak. “J-Lau” is 3-3 in his last six Octagon appearances.

Should be a fun fight to watch, but i do think this is a bad matchup for Lauzon, Varner has better boxing, good power, and pretty good wresting, I think if Lauzon doesnt get a finish in the 1st he loses by Dec or late tko.

looks like I’m following Creature around and agreeing with him. :)

Varner has always been overlooked and Lauzon has always been overrated. I think Varner finishes it in the 2nd by TKO.

The question in my mind is whether Varner’s fight against Barboza is representative, or a fluke. Varner didn’t look anywhere near that sharp in his fights against Cerrone, Roller, Henderson and Shalorus at the end of WEC.

He’s been through a lot of personal stuff between his WEC days — and the three-way dances with Cerrone / Henderson.

Creature’s assessment seems spot-on. Lauzon is one of the most dangerous dudes for the first round, but always seems to run out of steam. Varner has all the skills necessary to push the fight into “deep waters”. Hell, Varner may just need to stuff the first few takedowns and make sure he doesn’t eat any big winging punches — IMO that should be enough.

Lauzon’s a tough SOB, but until he develops a reputation for being a killer for all 15 minutes, I have to defer to Creature here. I see Varner hanging in there until Joe empties the chamber, then it’s probably going to be a TKO win for “The Worm”.

This went from a fight that was going to be crazy exciting and put the winner on track to challenge a top 10 guy to a fight that by all rights Varner should win, and that is a dangerous spot to be in. I think Joe pulls it out in what should be a very tough fight and great matchmaking on the fly here.
