UFC 148 Results: Anderson Silva takes down Chael Sonnen with second round stoppage

Saturday evening was a good time to pop your corn, as UFC 148 unfolded from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas with a card fans had been looking forward to since 2010 when UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva nearly fell by decision to Chael Sonnen. Last night’s lineup was capped off by a rematch between the two heated rivals and also came with the added bonus of Tito Ortiz taking to the Octagon one final time before calling it a career.

Fans of Silva nearly saw a repeat of the initial encounter when Sonnen put “The Spider” on his back ten seconds into the first frame of action, then pounded on him for the ensuing 4:50 until the round ended. Things nearly looked to be headed the same route in the second stanza but Silva was able to stuff Sonnen’s takedowns and duck under a strike sending Sonnen down to the mat as a result of momentum. Silva quickly took advantage of the position and landed a stiff knee to Sonnen’s sternum, following up quickly with some punches against the cage once Sonnen stood up that put the outspoken grappler back down for the final sequence of strikes to earn the TKO stoppage.

Ortiz, who was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame earlier today, faced Forrest Griffin in a rubber match of their series featuring each man winning a Split Decision. The bout went back-and-forth with each man landing some solid shots and Ortiz even dropping Griffin on a pair of occasions. However, in the end Griffin’s strikes landed more consistently and were enough to earn him the decision nod.

Costa Philippou’s takedown defence was amazing. Big props to him for not taking the easy way out on that horrific eye gouge.

Good god, I hope the decision streak ends with Guillard.

Tibau did nothing that fight. The decision was not controversial.

Mendes with a body shot stoppage. Worth it, having endured 6 UDs.

This performance made me hate AS even more. I guess it’s ok to cheat multiple times in one round as long as your the champ and it’s against Sonnen.

Chael beat himself. Tried to get too fancy. Anderson is a class act, I cannot disrespect that. Greatest of all time.

  • Lord Faust says:

The knee was legal. Sonnen had a great first round, but he lost fair.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 7 Thumb down 3

  • MCM says:

I agree that Chael beat himself in this one. Not saying that Silva wouldn’t have one (even though I didn’t want him to), but Chael definitely helped him out with that spinning back fist attempt.

And for Yves Lavinge’s information, that is what “Working” looks like.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 6 Thumb down 1

  • MCM says:

But the grabbing of the shorts that kept Chael from getting a takedown and the one at the belt line that kept him backing away wasn’t legal.
It’s always easy to forgive the first one, but the second was blatantly cheating.
Not that it had much affect on the out come.

Not related to main event, but what da F was forrest doin after the fight when he tried to bouce. I love him, came to fight, and struck great but still charged outta the cage? Most unstable UFC fighter…

Not exactly out on a stretcher but it’ll do. Anderson Silva is a class act. To invite everyone to give Chael a hand and invite him over for a BBQ after the Brazilian steak comment was good.

After that shitload of money Sonnen made Silva, he should at least get a nice steak.

  • raker says:

Silva said it the pre-fight interviews that Chael had a dominant position for 20+ minutes in the first fight and couldn’t finish, and if that he had dominant position it would have ended. He wasn’t kidding. First dominant position in 30+ minutes against Sonnen and he hit it outta the park.

What, am I supposed to start a thread about “things easier to predict than a Silva TKO in the 2nd round”…?

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 2

  • Richard Stabone says:

I won the Cung Le fight, was a little hesitant about Guillard but went ahead and parlayed him with Silva to improve the odds, but lost my freaking value bet of Tito by decision which would have paid 4 to 1…dammit.

Still not a bad night. The Silva odds weren’t great but still a gift from above. Easiest money to lay in a long time.

I was definitely wrong about Chael shaking hands though. Nice gesture by Chael to finally bow to the hand that fed him.

Good fights, kinda confused about the two body shot tko’s though, also did anyone else think McKenzie looked drunk or something during the fight? I haven’t seen the dude fight often so maybe that’s just how he always looks. I thought forrest/tito should of gotten fotn it was a good fight, although I do think it should of been a split decision for forrest not a UD. Also classy of forrest and tito to give each other their shirts.

New paragraph. I was kinda shocked silva did 3 questionable things, first he basically greased by rubbing Vaseline all over his body from his face, and then the two holding the shorts to make sure chael did what he wanted. But him and Chael were both classy after the fight which is always great. The first time Silva spoke in Brazilian I thought he was bitching at the crowd for booing actually. I have to put my friends pissed off quote here too, He says Silva is the luckiest UFC fighter alive. Except not so nicely.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • AlphaOmega says:

Ok so forrest/tito did get fotn, I got confused because they had that little bar thing pop up saying MP fight of the night when silva was getting his hand raised.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

  • qat says:

Forrest vs. Tito got the FOTN. But i think Tito kinda looked like a zombie plodding forward just looking for the big hit and beeing gassed very early. Forrest moved good, but had his sloppy moments as well, and he almost lost himself the fight in the third by being stupid.

I would have given FOTN to Le vs. Cote, that was a good one.

The ref wiped silvas body with a towel before the fight started.

  • Rece Rock says:

A knee to the solar plexus has nothing to do with luck… Sonnen could have finished the fight in the first when he had a dominant position for the majority of the round but once again Sonnen showed the difference between a champion and the runner up…the moment Silva had a dominant position he finished his opponent, Sonnen is good but not the best.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  • AlphaOmega says:

True, but he still did it. And my friend was talking more about sonnen missing the spinning back fist and slipping, which like I told him, should Silva of not capitalized on it and just let sonnen get back up? That’s not smart fighting.

  • Screenplaya says:

    Dear Sonnen fans,

Your guy has to learn how to do damage from the top. He is the king of lay and pray. He is the least exciting fighter in the UFC. If he didn’t run his mouth so wonderfully, none of you would give two shits about him.

He gained full mount with a minute remaining in round one and never landed one meaningful strike after that point. He needs to learn how to finish people if he wants to be anything but a windbag who it a footnote in UFC history.

  • AlphaOmega says:

In the post fight press conference, someone asked Silva who he’d like to fight next, and I couldn’t quite here what he said and dana said oh ya i forgot about him, the one guy I can’t get. What’d he say?

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Best part of the post-fight presser was the look on Silva’s face when he was asked if he wanted to fight Bones, and said “nope”.

That was funny, the feed I watched started right in the middle of dana bitching about forrest, so did they say why silva showed up late?

I didn’t catch that part, my stream died in the beginning and only got back in after the Forrest stuff was done with. Had to read some re-caps.
