UFC 148 Results: Anderson Silva takes down Chael Sonnen with second round stoppage

Saturday evening was a good time to pop your corn, as UFC 148 unfolded from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas with a card fans had been looking forward to since 2010 when UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva nearly fell by decision to Chael Sonnen. Last night’s lineup was capped off by a rematch between the two heated rivals and also came with the added bonus of Tito Ortiz taking to the Octagon one final time before calling it a career.

Fans of Silva nearly saw a repeat of the initial encounter when Sonnen put “The Spider” on his back ten seconds into the first frame of action, then pounded on him for the ensuing 4:50 until the round ended. Things nearly looked to be headed the same route in the second stanza but Silva was able to stuff Sonnen’s takedowns and duck under a strike sending Sonnen down to the mat as a result of momentum. Silva quickly took advantage of the position and landed a stiff knee to Sonnen’s sternum, following up quickly with some punches against the cage once Sonnen stood up that put the outspoken grappler back down for the final sequence of strikes to earn the TKO stoppage.

Ortiz, who was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame earlier today, faced Forrest Griffin in a rubber match of their series featuring each man winning a Split Decision. The bout went back-and-forth with each man landing some solid shots and Ortiz even dropping Griffin on a pair of occasions. However, in the end Griffin’s strikes landed more consistently and were enough to earn him the decision nod.
