Shoulder surgery derails “The Korean Zombie” and his push for a shot at Jose Aldo

No Chan Sung Jung-Jose Aldo match will be taking place in the immediate future.

Jung, better known as “The Korean Zombie” has elected to pull himself from any future fighters and have shoulder surgery. He has won three consecutive bouts, including an important win over Dustin Poirier earlier this year.

After defeating Poirier, Jung went on to call for a match with Aldo, the UFC’s featherweight champion. The odds of the bout going down this year appeared slim-to-none, as Aldo is locked in a match with Erik Koch.

MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani confirmed with sources that Jung has decided to have the surgery, which doctor’s pushed on him first prior to facing Poirier. “The Korean Zombie” was also asked by UFC officials to fight in November on the Macau, China card, but this surgery will keep him from doing that.

Aldo and Koch are expected to finally square off later this year from Brazil at UFC 153, though nothing has been confirmed. It is possible that the winner of that contest could meet Jung early in 2013.

Definitely sucks, but you also want to be 100% when going up against Aldo, so it’s a tough call to weight. Take the shot now when you’re not fully healthy and risk putting on a horrible title fight, or get healed up now and hope you get the chance again to go full 100% for the title.
