Welcome home, Cowboy; Donald Cerrone lands in UFC 150 co-main event with Melvin Guillard

Donald Cerrone asked for one thing after his victory over Jeremy Stephens earlier this year: to be included on the August UFC card in Denver.

Well, “Cowboy” has been granted his wish, as Cerrone will meet Melvin Guillard in the co-main event of UFC 150.The card takes place August 11 from Denver’s Pepsi Center.

This will be Cerrone’s second co-main event billing. The last one did not go his way, as Nate Diaz claimed a victory over him, halting an impressive win streak in the process. Cerrone was born in nearby Colorado Springs, so he wanted the chance to compete near family and friends.

Since that loss, Cerrone (18-4) has rebounded to defeat Stephens. He’ll look to keep his momentum going against Guillard, a former training partner at Jackson/Winkeljohn gym in New Mexico.

Guillard (47-11-3) kept his standing in the ultra-competitive UFC lightweight division by topping Fabricio Camoes. He now works with the Blackzilians in Florida.

UFC 150 will feature a main event for the UFC lightweight championship, as Benson Henderson defends his title for the first time against Frankie Edgar. Henderson won the belt from Edgar earlier this year.

What happened to Cowboy fighting Pettis next? I thought that’s what they had lined up for both of them to get closer to title contention.

I think Pettis should be fighting Diaz in a #1 contender fight. But since Nate is gonna try to wait it out and see what happens with the next Frankie-Bendo fight, then yeah I agree it should be Cowboy taking on Pettis. I’m not sure what they’re planning to do with Pettis. Maybe have him take on Maynard?

All I know is the UFC hasn’t done Pettis any favors since he opted to take a fight instead of waiting for a title shot after the WEC folded. If I’m a guy like Condit or Nate Diaz, once a title shot is in sights you might as well wait for it rather than taking the riskier road. Sucks for us as fans at times, but it is what it is.

Isn’t Pettis on the shelf until September? I guess giving Cowboy what he wants (to fight in Denver) and giving him Guillard (who’s back on track) makes sense for the division and will help promote the event.
