Luke Rockhold hopes Ronaldo Souza is his next challenge in Strikeforce

Strikeforce middleweight champ Luke Rockhold knows his first encounter with Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza was a close, five-round affair. That’s why Rockhold is hoping Souza gets past Derek Brunson next month and is placed in a match with him down the road.

Rockhold won the title by besting “Jacare” last year and has since defended it successfully against Keith Jardine and Tim Kennedy. Souza will face Brunson in August at Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman.

“There are quite a few new middleweights in the division now, like Lorenz Larkin and Roger Gracie, but I think ‘Jacare’ is the most likely challenger,” said Rockhold in a recent interview with Sherdog. “Our fight needs closure, and I’d like to have a chance to finish it.”

While both Larkin and Gracie were victorious recently, they are just getting settled into the middleweight ranks. Souza’s loss to Rockhold was the last on his resume since 2008.

I’m tired of watching Rockhold defend takedowns for 5 rounds. Is there anyone on the SF roster that would strike with him?

Ask Keith Jardine how well that worked out for him. ;)

I am just happy to see a champ step up and call-out a guy that many spectators think beat him for his title; that’s championship integrity.

I wasn’t sold on Rockhold but seeing him handle Kennedy like he did, I am beginning to warm up to the guy. I didn’t have any reason to dislike him but, likewise I didn’t have a reason to like him — that’s changing quickly.

Now, if Strikeforce would just promote their work. I am tired of beating the “under-exposed” drum.

Also, you can’t blame Luke for trying to find the biggest available name to fight. I’m sure he can use all the money he can get.
