UFC on FOX 4 Results: Mauricio Rua rocks Brandon Vera, Lyoto Machida blasts Ryan Bader

The UFC was back with a free card on FOX last night with a lineup that many would argue was superior to a handful of their PPV offerings thus far in 2012. Headlined by light heavyweight legend Mauricio Rua mixing it up with Brandon Vera, the show also featured a co-headlining clash between Rua’s fellow former champion Lyoto Machida taking on TUF winner Ryan Bader with Joe Lauzon-Jamie Varner and Mike Swick-DaMarques Johnson making up the rest of the network-bound card.

The evening was full of action with every bout on the main card resulting in some form of finish and only two decisions total at the entire event. Machida and Rua came away with their hands raised due to strike-based stoppages with each delivering an impressive beatdown of their respective opponents, while Swick returned after an extended absence to flatten Johnson and Lauzon improved his remarkable stat of having finishes 22 of the 22 opponents he’s beaten.

Read below for a rundown of UFC on FOX 4 results:

John Moraga def. Ulysses Gomez via Knockout Round 1 (Strikes)
Manny Gamburyan def. Michihiro Omigawa via Unanimous Decision
Phil De Fries def. Oli Thompson via Submission Round 2 (Rear-Naked Choke)
Rani Yahya def. Josh Grispi via Submission Round 1 (North-South Choke)
Phil Davis vs. Wagner Prado – No Contest (Eye Poke)
Nam Phan def. Cole Miller via Split Decision
Mike Swick def. DaMarques Johnson via Knockout Round 2 (Strikes)
Joe Lauzon def. Jamie Varner via Submission Round 2 (Triangle Choke)
Lyoto Machida def. Ryan Bader via Knockout Round 2 (Strikes)
Mauricio Rua def. Brandon Vera via TKO Round 4 (Strikes)

As a wise man once said, “Nice KO to start off the card. Moraga looked pretty comfortable and has some real power.”

Omagawa might have the toughest chin in MMA. Either that, or he’s got a black belt in the Korean Zombie school of fighting. Great 3rd round.

For as impressive a specimen as Oli Thompson is, I don’t think he’ll see a third fight in the UFC as he seems to be lacking in aspects of the fight game.

I had that Nam 2 rnds to 1, but nobody gets screwed out of dec. more than Nam Phan. Glad he won this one.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

Yep, glad Nam got the nod.

    My main card winners:

Johnson (wouldn’t mind seeing Swick start getting things back on track with a win here, but after a couple years of inactivity I’m skeptical)

    Lauzon

    Machida

    Shogun

If an upset happens in the LHW matchups it’ll be Vera, as Bader has no shot IMO.

  • Richard Stabone says:

Bader has power but there’s no fludity to his striking and Machida’s style will only compound that, making Bader look slow & plodding tonight.

Another great 1st round of action. Tough to score; Varner might have got it with the late knockdown.

Awesome fucking fight. Probably go Varner in the 1st, Joe with the 2nd.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

Well the opening act more than delivered. Here’s hoping for more.

Still blown away by that last transition that started with a really powerful takedown from Varner. Amazing how good these guys at this level are.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • MCM says:

I just realized how many fighters on this card are looking for career redemptions. Swick, Varner, and Vera. Swick won big, Varner may have lost but he looked great doing it and it shouldn’t hurt his career. Here’s hoping Vera can look at least Varner good or better yet, Swick good.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

Good call, MCM. I just can’t go as far as picking Vera to win but wouldn’t be surprised if he comes up with a Varner-esque performance to bring a big fight in a losing effort.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

Yeah, that was just upper level against the next level. Not fair.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

Silva vs. Forrest type of thing

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

Nothing wrong with being Forrest & Bader, of course. They’re just not on that upper echelon.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • MCM says:

Does Machida have the words “Fungus Killer” right above his crotch? That’s as bad as the guys with “Condom Depot” on their asses.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 5 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

And BTW, Machida has to be the leader in the clubhouse for the next shot at Jones (or Hendo).

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Lord Faust says:

My money’s on Machida and Shogun coaching the next TUF Brazil.

Glover pulverizes Rampage and pole vaults to the front of the line.

Plus, if Hendo wins then they can do whatever they want. (Possibly a superfight between Hendo and Silva.)

    ….

OK, I’ve had a few drinks.

I’d be very happy to see a dominant win. This has been an amazing card.

Great fight but both dudes slowing down in the 2nd of 5 rounds… like Faust said earlier this week, at what point does the punishment catch up with Shogun?

Holly Shit. This is better than Varner/Lauzon!

Very glad I made time to watch this. I’d wager Vera gets the Hardy treatment here.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

Oh hell yeah… Varner & Vera should both be back, and on the main card.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

It looks like Lyoto is getting a title shot.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

  • MCM says:

It looked to me like Vera wanted out right at the end there. I don’t blame him, this being his first time going into the fourth round. But Vera grabbed his face right at the end, then just dropped. Great fight all around though.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

  • Richard Stabone says:

Or at least the televised prelims, which might actually be better from a sponorship standpoint.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

  • Big Stank says:

    Shogun or Machida?

Bader was a walking punching bag and got KTFO

Vera fought his ass off and got KTFO.

Either way, awesome night of fights! Best in a while

replay shows he was adjusting his mouth piece. Still a great fight.

  • MCM says:

Faust is right, Glover gets the next title shot.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Richard Stabone says:

I like Faust’s scenario, but as much of a schmuck as Rampage has been in recent years it’s still a tall task to knock that sumbitch out. And whether we want it or not, Glover aint getting a shot this early into his UFC career.

I’m OK with Machida getting another crack at Jones’ belt, as he’s obviously a highly skilled fighter that is tricky to face. But I don’t like how tonight became a mini eliminator tourney. Machida had a much easier matchup against Bader than Shogun did against a very inspired Vera. It was painfully obvious from the outset, and things played out exactly as I expected.

But if Machida is next in line, then let’s get Shogun & Gustafsson get together, to welcome Alex to the big time.

  • Creature says:

God damn the fights tonight were amazing.. Seriously these all more than made up for the shitty 149 performances and from Phan/Miller to Shogun/Vera i dont think there were any real losers (Except Bader). Everyone fought there asses off and have nothing to be ashamed of.

I was really happy to see Vera show some of that old form he used to have, it seemed to me that the longer the fight went on the more confidence he gained.. he was throwing some very nice counters and combos. Hopefully he gets another chance.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 4 Thumb down 1

  • What a card! Welcome back swick! Varner n lauzon was amazingly as was shogun vs Vera. Machida.has insane timing, that was beautiful! All fox.cards should look like that

I’m going to get so much hate for a part of this comment.

I thought it was a great night of the fights, sadly I missed every single prelim because my friend can’t read a clock. Was happy Swick came back with a KO, and very very happy Machida won by KO…didn’t like the main event. To me it was boring because how gassed and tired both fighters were, their punches after the second round didn’t have anything on them, and most of the time in clenches and takedowns they just laid there until they got some wind to do something.
