Rory MacDonald pulled from fight with B.J. Penn after suffering serious cut in training

Rory MacDonald suffered a cut over his right eye during training recently and the end result was 38 stitches. MacDonald was also knocked out of a planned encounter with B.J. Penn at UFC 152 due to the damage, as he will not be able to get back into the gym at full-speed for a month.

Now, “Ares” is hoping that he can get Penn to sign on the dotted line for a battle at UFC 154 which takes place from Montreal in November.

“We have notified the UFC that Rory will be ready to fight in November and requested that if it works for the UFC, and BJ will agree, that Rory would love to fight BJ on November 17 in Montreal,” said Lex McMahon the manager for MacDonald, in an interview with MMAFighting.

Penn replied back by way of Twitter, posting, “I am sorry to hear about the injury to Rory MacDonald. This is a fight that got me out of retirement and one that I was looking forward to. I would like to wish Rory a speedy and healthy recovery and request a postponement of our fight to the Rio card. To Rory, let’s stay with VADA and continue through with the program from now until we fight!”

Can someone tell me how the hell you get a cut that needs 38 stitches in Training? I get that a well placed elbow or knee can do the trick, but haven’t these guys heard of head gear? Every doctor, everywhere on the planet, that has ever been asked all say the same thing. You can’t train “Chin”. So why the hell aren’t fighters, trainers, coaches, encouraging the use of head gear anytime you step in the cage except for the actual fight?

I also like how each fighter is trying to get the hometown advantage. But I have to agree with BJ. 153 seems like a better fit and this fight could easily jump into the main or co-main event if something happens to either of those bouts.

In most training videos I’ve seen, the fighter doesn’t wear the gear but the people sparing with them do.

That’s what I’ve seen too, and it doesn’t make any sense to me. I wondered if they did it just for the videos but how else would Rory get a cut that required 38 stitches? Maybe I’m off base, I don’t know.

I wonder if it’s considered a sign of weakness to wear pads/gear. Or maybe that they can’t fight wearing that stuff so they don’t want to risk getting into a bad habit that the gear might form. But a cut that nasty almost says that it had to of been either an accidental knee/elbow/kick, or one that was thrown to strong.
