Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza was surprised when the announcement was made Luke Rockhold had scored a decision victory over him last year, winning the Strikeforce middleweight title in the process. Now, Souza must get past rising prospect Derek Brunson tonight in the co-main event of Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman to secure his rematch with Rockhold.
Souza (15-3) earned a submission victory over Bristol Marunde in his first match since the decision loss to Rockhold. He has also found success in five of his last six outings.
“Luke Rockhold, our champion, has made it very clear he’d like to fight ‘Jacare,’” said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker in a recent interview with MMAJunkie. “This is a tough fight for ‘Jacare,’ and if he can get through Brunson, that’s a fight we would probably like to make happen.”
His opponent, Brunson, is 9-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 inside the Strikeforce cage. Souza, however, will pose his biggest challenge to date. “Jacare” has fought the likes of Rockhold, Jason “Mayhem” Miller, Gegard Mousasi, Tim Kennedy and Robbie Lawler during his career.
