Randy Couture is not your typical parent.
As a former UFC champion in two divisions, and a member of the Hall of Fame, “The Natural” has come to embrace his son, Ryan Couture, joining the ranks of professional MMA. The younger Couture is currently 5-1 in his professional career, including a recent victory over Joe Duarte on a Strikeforce card.
“I’m kind of making up for some lost time in a lot of ways,” said Randy in a recent interview with UFC’s website. “Most people don’t get that opportunity, but I’ve been fortunate to have him as close as I get to have him to me right now. I’m just enjoying the ride.”
The elder Couture has remained retired since a loss to Lyoto Machida in 2011. Along with helping train his son, he still works at his Xtreme Couture gym and has a booming movie career that includes roles in The Expendables franchise.
“I try to stay out of the way as much as possible,” the seasoned veteran admitted. “It’s already a burden dragging around the last name. In some ways, it slapped a target on him from the jump; (but) he takes all that in stride.”
Couture, a Strikeforce lightweight, has not been linked to any future fights though it seems likely he will compete sooner than later.
