UFC looking to bring four smaller events to Japan in 2013 with focus on local fighters

The UFC made quite the impact upon returning to Japan in February for UFC 144. Now, it appears that the promotion is planning on helping build a larger fan base among the nation’s people by highlighting a few of their own.

UFC 144 marked the first event in the Land of the Rising Sun since 2000 and included Benson Henderson claiming the lightweight title from Frankie Edgar.

In a report by NikkanSports (and transcribed by AsianMMA), the UFC is looking to hold four events in the country during 2013. The cards would feature local fighters and take place in venues that seat upwards of 5,000 people, a far cry from the 20,000 fans UFC 144 brought to Saitama Super Arena.

UPDATE: A UFC official has since revealed the company is only looking into the possibility of the mini-shows and hasn’t committed yet.
