UFC 153 Results: Anderson Silva stops Stephan Bonnar with strikes in opening round of headlining rumble

The UFC brought the Octagon to Brazil for the fifth time in history but never for a show quite like UFC 153. In the span of a single afternoon the main card was in absolute shambles due to injuries, though the disappointment would only last for a short time when days later it was announced middleweight champion Anderson Silva would take on beloved Ultimate Fighter veteran Stephan Bonnar at 205 pounds. “The Spider” entered the affair putting a fifteen-fight winning streak in the Octagon on the line, while Bonnar was in the dangerous position of battling with nothing to lose and everything the gain considering Silva’s status as pound-for-pound king.

In the end, Silva kept his run intact with an impressive win not unlike his victory over Forrest Griffin. The explosive Brazilian baited Bonnar from the beginning, dropping his hands and backing up against the fence before delivering a killer knee strike to his foe’s chest that left him incapacitated. Silva followed it up with a few strikes and the ref jumped in to stop things when Bonnar didn’t defend himself, handing the confident competitor a strike-based stoppage in the process.

As far as the co-main event, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira squared off with Dave Herman in a heavyweight scuffle. Fans who were anxious to see if Nogueira used his legendary jiu-jitsu against Herman exited the scrap with smiles after “Minotauro” did away with Herman’s assessment that BJJ doesn’t work in MMA by earning an Armbar victory in the second stanza of their scrap.

I genuinely believe that submission finish by Nog will inspire Anderson to come out guns blazing more than he otherwise might have. For Bonnar, what an incredible moment to walk to the cage to fight the greatest…and also completely unnerving, where someone like myself might shit their shorts.

Silva finishes this in the 1st, mayyyybe 2nd.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  • Lord Faust says:

Like I said in my prediction article on my site:

If Bonnar is able to exit the first round while still standing without help, that will be a victory in-and-of itself. Really, he just needs to do better than Forrest Griffin did against Anderson; so the goal is to not look like you’re fighting on Xanax, and definitely not get suspended afterward for fighting while on Xanax.

  • Lord Faust says:

Big credit to Bonnar for putting on a valiant effort. Right up until that brutal knee to the solar plexus, Bonnar was fighting his ass off. I hope he doesn’t retire after this. He definitely looked better than Forrest; Silva got tagged a few times but his awe-inspiring ability to roll with punches rendered all of that moot.

    Main card delivered big.

Totally agree Maia should get sub of the night. He combined the technical finesse of his BJJ mastery with brute strength/leverage until Story had absolutely no choice but to tap. It was pretty amazing Story held out as long as he did.

I got the Silva-Fitch fight wrong, but feel fine about my pick. Confidence is good but Erick came out way too loose & lackadaisical, especially against a guy like Fitch who you just cannot let grab ahold of you. He let Jon hang around (and probably win) the 1st round, and by the early part of the 2nd round Silva, from my view, was already slowing down. Even before he sunk in his rear naked.

Once Jon escaped the choke, it was the beginning of the end. Great performance by Fitch, and plenty to learn from this fight for Silva.

The other one I got wrong was just a shitty pick. Dave Herman is a bust. I love Nog but he’s an old dog in this game, coming off the brutal injury/surgery, and he looked like crap walking into the cage. But Herman dicked around, and at the start of the 2nd round he didn’t even bother throwing a kick (despite his corner’s pleas) before Nog began to overwhelm him. After watching it play out I’m glad Nog won, but yeah that’s the last time I ever pick Pee Wee (should’ve learned my lesson after losing $$ on him in Vegas against friggin Roy).

Anderson Silva is incredible. The only fair fight is Jon Jones (or heavyweights), neither of which is gonna happen. Poop.

If Glover / Maldonado isn’t FOTN, then Maldonado deserves a fat locker room bonus, 8 months off, and another fight against someone who isn’t an MMA murderer.

Agree or Disagree: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

  • MCM says:

They better keep Maldonado around. I know he’s down 3 fights but I can’t be the only one that thought he was robbed against Kingsbu. I also thought he was dropping to 185 before the opportunity to fight Glover came up. So maybe he gets new life at MW.

Pee Wee should get cut. Chael just said he needs to go talk to his trainers and ask them why he doesn’t know how to fight, and I couldn’t agree more.

What an amzing night of fights and crazy drama. At two different times, I thought we were in actual danger of having a fighter very badly hurt. Story’s head darn near popped off into Maia’s constricting arms, and the way Maldonado was standing, but only with the aid of the cage, while still swinging, I thought he was going to get his lights switched off, possibly permanently.

But, the real take away is that this was a great card, filled with some excellent performances.

Oh, and Anderson Silva is the best 205 pound fighter in the world. Jones is holding his crown. He better hope the Spider never comes looking for it.
